Andre Palfrey-Martin Collection

Jim Hobbs…..Cool photo

Andre Martin…..This was taken in the old shop in Queens Road, does anybody recall the name of the young lady in the picture, she worked in the shop.

Jim Breeds…. Cool picture, still have all my 7″ singles, including “World Without Love”. Please lock me away

Mick Knights….Nice to see that Alan made the effort to tidy up the counter before the vist. Still have a few “I love big Al” dust covers. Does anyone remember the cartoons that Alan used to draw and put in the shop window to illustrate new single releases, I particulary recall one, where a performer was between two electric sockets and neither the guitar or amp lead would reach, the single was of course Elvis Presley and surrender!

Alan Esdaile….Your right Mick, a bit of a mess but I bet Alan knew where everything was. I was one of those customers that would go in and ask for something bizarre that I’ve just heard on Radio Luxembourg but Alan always managed to track down and get what I wanted. His music knowledge and memory was great and likewise the same can be said about Jack London.

Jim Breeds….Have you seen the video of Jack in his shop talking to a customer?

Alan Esdaile…. did post it awhile ago but will post again, as interesting for new people here.

Andre Martin…..Two great record shops and characters within a few yards of each other – we were so lucky.

Jim Breeds….We were indeed.

Julie Findlay-jones….Happy memories, cant see the badge machine tho x

Matt Thomas….Definitely 84 Ghostbusters is in the chart and Bob Marley Legend video on top shelf lol

Tony Ham….If I had all the money I spent in there, still got all the records though!

Karen Sweatman….My friend really really fancied him!

Jim Breeds….I can almost smell the place! All record shops had the certain smell of paper, card and vinyl. Plus cigarette in this case

Alan Esdaile….I know what you mean by the smell of a record shop. I can remember the first Virgin record shop in Brighton, opposite the clock tower, you were certain to get high on the atmosphere.

Jim Breeds….OMG yes, that Virgin shop in Brighton was a revelation! After I first discovered it I used to get the train over there just to go to that store. Soft deep carpets and scatter cushions where you could squat all day if you wanted, just talking to people, listening to the music and taking in the “atmosphere”! That comment brought back memories!! Far Out Man. There was a pretty decent record shop in The Lanes too I recall, though somewhat more conventional than the Virgin store.

Mick Knights….Remember queing outside the Virgin store in the freezing cold to buy Led Zepplin tickets and not objecting to the blatant queque jumpers, only to be the first to be refused entry, as they had sold out. Not bitter or anything!!!!

Sarah Harvey….I always remember going to watch the Hastings Old Town Carnival many years ago and seeing Chris on the back of a lorry playing drums like his life depended on it…. no shirt as ever, but what a welcome sound it was after all the majorettes. So much energy. Superb!

Chris Sambrook….Thank you Sarah very kind of you. Chris
