Pete Prescott… I did a session for him once. Mike Hatchard booked me for it. (Mike was incredibly kind to me on that session )Tony Macaulay was fascinating. Lots of great stories. So many hits he had written ! We were demoing songs for the proposed musical of Goodnight Sweetheart. (blitz meets cockney ) the writers of the tv show visited us, amazing session. I realised I can’t sing like a cockney (gaw blimey guvner! Wantcha tummy rubbed !) BBC 2 came and interviewed him while we were there.

SMART Coffee meet 42 report

Our 42nd meet and a number of people left early for a separate meeting on Hastings Pier but were quickly replaced by late comers. Among the newbies this time were John Baker and Sid Saunders. John was chatting about the times he worked at The Aquarius and Astral Club. Sid was remembering pirate radio days, when a disc jockey used to appear in the Pier cafe and they used to give him request on a piece of paper to take back to the ship. Lee Merry had photos of gig posters of bands he promoted at The Carlisle and other places in the 1980’s. Among the bands were English Rogues, Truncheon Meat Squad, Vicious Minds, Becki and The Bombshells, Big Spanner and Lost In Space. Len Benton arrived with a Record Songbook featuring Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas on the cover, also some more photos of The Seekers, Pardon and Deep Purple. Roger Carey had with him a flyer from early 2000 of bands that played at the Pilot Field club. Also leaflets of Alexander’s in Chester when Liane was on the bill. Among the other interested names to appear was Jan Akkerman.  He also had a recent leaflet for Sprit Of 66 Festival Belgium which featured some great acts.  Mick O’Dowd was talking about Wynder K Frog album and Johnny Walker and Radio London. Sarah Harvey was looking forward to Hastings Rock radio ,back on the airways on 5th May. Pete Prescott had with him the first glance of Beatles Day 19 programme, as well as bags full of lp’s and singles. Including The Telham Tinkers Hot In Alice Springs, Andrew Caine What Kind Of World 12” single and a interesting compilation The Tony Macaulay and John MacLeod Song Book Album. Lots of chat and thoughts about the future of The White Rock Theatre and gardens, Graham Nash coming to the De La Warr and Scalliwags reunion on 31st March at The Masonic Hall. This is just a small bit of what I remember, anyone who wishes to add anything interesting you were talking about, then please feel free to do so.

Andy Qunta… Sounds like a fun time, as always!
