Peter Thomson… First place I ever tasted Fosters lager, on a warm summer evening. It was genuine Ozzy fair, imported and served from a tinny. Tasted ok but was significantly stronger than the artificial urine we get now. You want to know how bad it is? Try it at room temperature! This is CAMRA signing off…

Alan Pepper… Was it opposite what is now AZUR ? I think we did go there 1977 en route to Scalliwags Fridays ‘back in the day’ !! When the Bee Gees ruled the decks . Get on down !

Tim Moose Bruce… Great place. Went there in the 70s from college. Done gigs in the 80s in all 3 bars ( ground floor, upstairs and basement). Fantastic bands there. The likes of Mick Clarke band, Stevie Waller, Johnny Mars and loads more.

Phil Little… First time I ever came here was to play at Mr Cherry’s.

Dave Nattress… Yes Alan, that’s correct, opposite the Azur. A bit smooth if I remember – used to come over from Bexhill – a bit of a shock when I was used to the Anchor, Royal Standard and Nelson back in the day!

David Hobgen… Worked there for some time at the end of the ’70s and into the ’80s. Great times and then off to Scalliwags after work.

Wendy Belton… Remember it well as went to Hastings College for a while in the 70s. Last time I ever went in there was for a Hastings High School reunion in the 1980s sometime ….but cannot remember the year. Any past HHS pupils out there?

Nastassja Kaschevsky…Did a few gigs in there, always a great venue!

Simon Walker… Blimey. Takes me back. UAE’s to do lunch there whilst at college from 78-82. Then Scallis until I discovers The Carlisle and rock. Remember cherrys and the bands that played there. Steve Waller, Pete Haycock, and some local bands I had friends in, Ghia, And others who I can’t remember now.

Jeanette Jones… Used to go to The James Burton Lounge & Sun Bar when our Son Lim was small, we could have a drink, Sunday lunch & Lim (an only child in spite of our best efforts) got to play with all the children (usually, about 10) that had been sent up from the ground floor bar, by their parents. Jones & I were usually the only ‘adults’ up there. Remember one Sunday another party who seemed to be glaring over at us. Explained when after they’d eaten their meal & before they left, the ‘Lady’ came over & said, ‘Thank You for completely spoiling our Sunday, with all Your children, people like You shouldn’t be allowed to breed!’ Didn’t seem any point in trying to explain.

Jacquie Hinves… I do! Oh my goodness. I was a frequent visitor there whilst at Hastings College of Further Education. Spent the summer of 76 on the beach and trotted up for replenishment of refreshments. Dirty Derek had the Newsagent next door. Israeli Isaac would always be hanging around. Great days.

Just No One… I worked behind the Bar all those years ago when the Landlord was my dear friend Martin Harris & his then wife Pauline.Great times, wonderful atmosphere, live Bands, always welcoming with great selection of Real ales & Food from upstairs dropped down with the lift hatch. Martin went on to organise the Hastings Beer Festivals with great success.
He was a very good person who was honest & genuine but unfortunately he trusted his Staff who were close to him whom most went on to “ leach” on him subsequently with the Queens Head in Icklesham where he was financially abused & left with no respect. A sad ending for a dear very special person who knew how to create a very special environment in Hastings social history,much respected but sadly trodden on by the people he showed respect for.

Alan Vale… Sidewinder did a couple of packed out gigs there, they used to say we were too loud but thats the kind of band we were, very rush sounding plus loads of originals

Terry Whiberley… I remember Mr Cherry’s, always visited when in town visiting friends. It was the place to go for my social circle. Saw some good bands there and my friend having just got wed at the registry office, his dear wife and mother in law and I, went there to celebrate. Very low key affair but lovely venue with friendly people.

Yolande Kenward… I met my husband to be there – Nigel Peck – on Friday 15 July 1977, we married on 15 July 1978 at the Holy Redeemer RC. I was having a drink at the bar with Mandy Farrow when Nigel & his friend came in.
