Can you remember what posters you had on your bedroom wall? My sister had The Walker Brothers & Pinkerton’s Assorted Colours. I can remember The Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, Ursula Andress ‘She’ film poster and Christopher Lee Dracula among others. In the 70’s I had the Be Bop Deluxe Axe Victim.
Matt Thomas… Farrah Fawcett
Lauren Gower… Bowie and still have, framed now tho!origional virgin poster, again framed now.loads of others including a maxell carrier bag with Pete Murphy on it
Philip Meston… The Easy Rider Poster
Tim Moose Bruce… Badger by Roger Dean and the posters from Dark Side Of The Moon album
Will Cornell… Vintage B&W Chaplin, Keaton, WC Fields, and writer/radio jock Jean Shepherd (“A Christmas Story”) that I paid $1 each for–they gave way to freebies from albums like the Milton Glazer Dylan, White Album pics and poster, that piece of crap that came with “Let it Bleed”, Who Live at Leeds assorted stuff (that morons still think are the real contracts and try to get them appraised on “Antiques Roadshow”), The Band Stage Fright and more. Full page ads from the paper announcing tour dates, album releases, whatever, worked good too, This gem I still have thanks to my mother’s instinct not to trash it…from NY Times 12-21-69 during John & Yoko’s Bed in or some such antics…#1 Question at my record store in the 80s: Wide eyed kid (who’s never spent so much as a dime with you) gawking at your walls…you ask if he needs any help. “Um, um yeah, what do ya’ll do with those posters from the record companies once you take them down?” overheard comment at my record store in the ’80s: high school girls over at the poster rack (where we actually sold posters), flipping thru the display frames, they come to the one in slot B7: “OmiGod DuranDuran, quick Tiffini, come look, quick!!!!!!!!”
Karen Sweatman Was Blackman… I was Duran Duran …. everywhere, including the ceiling!
Matt Thomas… that was some of the perks of my working in Masons Music shop – staff got first pickings lol
Robert Wren… Gary Glitter
Will Cornell… Alas, in the 80s no licensing firm had the vision to put out a Jerneeee-O-Stynxwagon poster. It would’a been a huge hit! nd who could forget the “Urban Cowboy” phenomenon? Over here in the Lone Star State, even tho the star of the film was that greasy Yankee John Travolta, the soundtrack was megahuge esp on 8Track tape. We had a poster/placard dangling from the ceiling with 30lb test fishing line, over a pyramid we constructed of 8Tracks for this soundtrack. We added a starburst in the corner handwritten : “Get Your Urban Cowboy 8Ts Here only $11.99”. OK, here’s the #2 comment heard in the record breaking heatwave summer of ’80 in our store. Urban Cow-housewife strolls into the store, walks up and down the aisles looking back and forth, passes the great pyramid of Travolta three or four times….to which we ask “Are you finding what you need Ma’am?” “No”, she says “You don’t carry Urban Cowboy on 8Track, do you?”
Phil Gill… This one, a huge Athena version…. And this huge Athena one….
Pete Fairless… This one…
Kev Towner… Sex Pistols, Associates, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Heaven 17, Visage, Blondie, Japan, OMD…..!!
Nicola Dobson… Peter Frampton from The Herd Mickey.Dolenze Monkeys…The Trogs Beatles.. Stones…later David Essex!
Dawn Leaney… David Essex!!!! XX
Phil Thornton… Curved Air and Jimi Hendrix !!
John Wilde… Sean Connery, The Beatles, Albert Einstein, The Small Faces. Jimi Hendrix.
Andy Qunta… How’s this? Tony & I in our room around 1966, before Hendrix apparently anyway!
Angela Frances Gardner… Jimi Hendrix, a very psychedelic one!!
Sarah Harvey… Alvin Lee
Mick O’Dowd… My room when I was a young teen had all pics from the glossy mag Pop Weekly over every available space. As I grew older I painted The Witchdoctor logo on my wall in gloss paint and to be honest it was a masterpiece as I am no Van Gogh. Unfortunately my Dad (bless him) didn’t see it in the same light. We had a row and was told to get it off or else(Dads were fierce in those days). In the end I covered the wall with polystyrene (not the singer) tiles and as far as I know the logo is still well entrenched on that wall waiting for The Time Team to unearth it! Wonder what they would make of it?
Ralph Town… One Name……BOLAN!
Pete Fairless… Not related to music but I also had these:
Chris Sambrook… The poster of the NICE promoting their version of America and Eric Clapton in Hyde Park with Blind Faith.
Leigh Wieland-Boys… David Cassidy……followed shortly by David Essex, although I was a closet Zepplin & Yes fan but my friends wouldn’t have understood!!
John Storer… An almost-lifesize poster of Alice Cooper being hung by the neck, a poster of the first Sabbath album cover and, I believe, a poster of Rory Gallagher. Others I have long forgotten. however, my favourite wall covering was not a poster, but a newspaper headline on the wall in Phil Gill’s bedroom. It was at a time when Crystal Palace’s then-skipper, Gerry Queen, was in dispute with the club, allowing a newspaper to publish the headline “I’M A SKIVVY AT PALACE, SAYS QUEEN”
Will Cornell…This one was huge over here (although I remember it being B&W). The 80s had TONS of girls in thong bikinis, like “Haulin’ Ass” with four of them in the back of a pickup, backs to the camera.
Pete Fairless… Oh, here’s another one
Alan Esdaile… also a massive poster here Will Cornell and yes in black & white but one of the biggest selling posters was this one.
Terry Huggins… I had one on the ceiling above my bed that said “Have you taken your pill today?” but other than that, I never really got into posters.
Lauren Gower… My uncle used to have a poster shop in the arcade in the 70’s.
Will Cornell… Did they have “makin’ bacon” (mating pigs) and “Make Love not War” (mating rhinos) over there? Those were huge over here.
Phil Gill… Gosh, John Storer has a long memory Alan – I’d forgotten that one. Thanks for the memory.
Gary Kinch… Re the The tennis girl poster: That dress was auctioned this year and fetched £15,500 and yes Will, I remember the makin’ bacon poster. Don’t remember the Rhino one though. “Keep on Truckin’ ” and “Sod off” posters seemed popular.
Carol Ann Bolton… The Kinks, The Beatles and The Who.
Clive Richardson… Babe Ruth, Canton Trig, Donovan, Ritchie Havens & Half Human Band.
Peter Howard… Black and white B Bardot on a motorcycle, Woodstock, Easy Rider.
Jan Warren… I had Marc Bolan, Jimi Hendrix, Jethro Tull and Fusion Orchestra!! 🙂
