Wilson Pickett Mustang Sally, Carla Thomas B-A-B-Y, Arthur Conley Sweet Soul Music, Percy Sledge When A Man Loves A Woman, Sam & Dave I Got Everything I Need, Ben E King What Is Soul?, Otis Redding Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa Sad Song, Eddie Floyd Knock On Wood, Solomon Burke Keep Looking, Aretha Franklin I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You), Percy Sledge Warm and Tender Love, Wilson Pickett Land Of A Thousand Dances.
Alan Esdaile… This is one of the earliest must have compilation albums.
John Storer…..Ooh … a dissenting voice here! Shamefully, never got into proper soul music until my late 20s and when I discovered this album found it a tad too commercial and a lot more r’n’b than soul. Didn’t have any of the artists best tracks, really. But … hey … this from the bloke who thinks Motown Chartbusters Volume 3 is one of the three best pop albums of all time (the other two being The Monkees debut and The Beatles “A Hard Day’s Night”)
John Wilde…..One of my favorite albums.
Phil Gill…..Had it since I was 10 or 11. I bought it on CD a couple of years back. There’s another albums worth of bonus tracks on it. I think every covers band in the last 46 years has studied that album. And Wreckless Eric likes it too.
Andy Qunta…..Had it, loved it, lost it, wishI still had it! I think I’ll follow Phil Gill’s example & look for it on CD!
Mick O’Dowd……This was the must have sampler. Who remembers seeing Percy Sledge at The Aquarius. Small man with tight trousers if I remember! Also saw Ben E King and The Elgins there too.
Eric Harmer… Got this one.
Darren Holmes… Great album mine is in storage at the moment – love Solomon Byrne’s “Keep Looking”.
Phil Gill… Bought it in 1968(?), wore it out, bought another copy secondhand, eventually bought it in Brighton on CD. The CD and cover look exactly the same as the album and there’s a second disc with another 12 songs on. It’s a lovely package – I’ll scan it when I find time.
Leigh Weiland-Boys… Mustang Sally!
Nigel Sherwood… Seen it on e-bay 28 pounds
Paul Morfey… One of the first albums I brought and one of my favorites of all time. Still got it!! Love Sam and Dave (I got everthing I need)
Steve Maxted… I have the album. A classic
Eugene Hughes… Ditto
Jack Irving… Still have my copy. My band “Strange World” also play “Knock on Wood”
Paul Morfey… Yes I still have my original copy, mono, a few scraches, 50 years old and still one of my favorite albums
Tony Court-holmes… wish i still had my vinyl copy
Mick O’Dowd… This was a must-have way back then!
