Sarah Harvey says… Hastings Rock FM are looking for new and upcoming local(-ish) bands and artists to play at The Hastings Rock showcase events. We are especially interested in showcasing those composing and playing their own original music. We are a rock radio station so the music played should broadly fall into the rock category. There are three dates available in 2020 and you would play alongside two other bands / artists at the event as well as The Hastings Rock Roadshow. We already have some bands lined up so don’t miss out. Please Email : hrfest@hastingsrock.co.uk

Eddie Hazell – 1953 to 2013 by Chris Sambrook
EDDIE HAZELL 14th December 1953 – 17th September 2013 by Chris Sambrook.
My good friend Eddie Hazell passed away on 17th September 2013. He was for many years part of the Free Beach Concert for RNLI. He was adopted as the Captain of Tents and Gazebos, mainly because he was the only one who could erect these strange things in a matter of minutes, where as there would be a lot of head scratching and reading the instructions over and over. He also was a keen photographer and became the official photographer for the Beach Concert. He came down to the beach concert this year to help erect the tents. Although clearly suffering the ravages of radio therapy he insisted on erecting the tent for the PA. He was persuaded not to, but this was typical of the man because he cared. Eddie’s family and executors have kindly given me access to the pictures he took over the years. www.ninebattles.com have been given access to the photo’s for publication on behalf of the Eddie Hazell Estate. I also would like to pay tribute to the volunteers and musicians who are no longer with us who have helped to make this event unique for 25 years.
Maria Bessant… Lovely to see we still have all his photos and CD,s of concerts and also fire work night’s and drag racing
Maria Bessant… My best brother ever at rest with my loving husband Stephen Bessant. Miss you so much.x
Sid Saunders… I worked with Eddie at Subberfields garage when he was a young lad and went to his funeral with other ex staff members.

SMART 52 coffee meet report
Wet and very windy 52nd meet but didn’t discourage a Great turn out. Among the newbies this time were Nick Bloomfield, Peter and Sue Thomson and Paul Crimin. Nick was talking about his interesting website about the power of music to inspire, provoke and entertain, musicfortheheadandheart.buzz and also his filming and working on his song ‘beyond the lies’. Great to see Peter and Sue and Pete have with him a collection of old gig tickets of Thin Lizzy, Be Bop Deluxe, The Who and The Stranglers. They were also reminiscing with Tony Davis about when Tony did the disco at their wedding. Paul Crimin was chatting about his new cd that is due for release next month and called ‘Unplugged and Unhinged’. Reg Wood had with him a copy of Ginger Baker’s Airforce album from 1970 and I hadn’t noticed before but the image inside the gatefold sleeve has the silver style of Wheels of Fire Cream cover. He was also talking about what’s happening for Hastings Week. Cliff Wootton left some leaflets for his ‘Beggars’ Gate’ gig at All Saints Church Crowborough on 16th November 2019. Pete Prescott was talking about creating a list of albums & singles released by Hastings area musicians. He had with him a bundle of singles, as well as a copy of the Home Studio Recordings magazine with Chris Cozens and Nick Magnus feature. Steve Fitzy was talking about his memories and the groups he has sung with. Roger Carey had a photo from the Peter Kirtley Jubilee Charity event in 1998, to aid the street children in Brazil. The photo features Liam Genockey, Nana Tsiboe, Peter Kirtley, Colin Gibson, Liane Carroll and Kenny Craddock. Phil Little was talking about local bands and singers don’t get their fair share of royalties when played on the radio and the Live Music Forum has written to PRS. Paul Huggett was reminding people about the forthcoming ‘Willfest’ in tribute to drummer Will Powell, which takes place at The Duke St Leonards on Saturday 26th October. Too many other people to mention but this is just a very small bit of what I remember, anyone who wishes to add anything interesting you were talking about, then please feel free to do so.
Lucy Pappas… Hope you all had a fabbie catch up xx
Josie Lawson… Glad it went well

Paul Crimin… Thank you for letting me sit at the same table as all of these local legends!
Reg Wood… Enjoyed it Alan. Thanks.
Elaine Roberts… Enjoyable afternoon, thank you. PS Nick Bloomfield’s song Behind The Lies is his first foray into music and he’s written, sung, and created it all himself – he usually films other people making their music https://youtu.be/JJwfvo30ERA
Peter Thomson… Great afternoon and so pleased we made it at last!
Colin Gibson… Ginger designed the cover as well as the Wheels on Fire cover
What Comedy Records do you still find funny?
Alan Esdaile… Canyons Of Your Mind by Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band and Yin Tong Song by The Goons.
Allyson Breeds… Any thing by The Beatles <running away>

Kev Carleonis… The best must sadly die
Mike Cope… RIP at The Great Gig in the Sky with all the other Greats. What a Session that must be…?!
Alan Parker… R.I.P. Ginger Baker.
Tony Court-holmes… worked on the pier the night he played hastings with the army. r.i.p.
Jan Warren… Oh nooooo, probably The best drummer ever!! R.I.P Ginger
Eric Cawthraw… I’ve just heard that Ginger Baker has just joined the Rhythm section in the sky. That’s Ginger and Jack gone – just Eric left! Spooky, it was only earlier that I was paying some Cream in the car to my lad and I mentioned that Mr. B was getting on a bit.
Alan Esdaile… I remember we promoted Baker Gurvitz Army at Chatham Town Hall but he wasn’t happy. I think it was down to the stage size or may have been the support bands equipment. However was a fantastic gig. R.I.P. Ginger Baker.
John Warner… Last saw him many years ago at the Cellar club, Kingston with Cream. Great group, great drummer!
Mick O’Dowd… Worked onstage with him at Martin-Casson Pier gig. Support band had to play half way up Pier even though The Army were only a 3 piece. Stood throughout set about 6 feet from him and that was an eye-opener! He made drums talk with hardly any effort. RIP Ginger.
Mike Waghorne… RIP
Deborah Mould… It’s sad that the drummers don’t get the recognition they deserve!
Danny Goyvaerts… Sad! Best drummer ever!
Peter Houghton… I saw the Baker Gurvitz Army and I think there were 4 Ginger the two Gurvitz Brothers and one other have to check my album cover I think the other guys name was Snips?
Neil Partrick… He was wonderful. If anyone’s not seen Meet Mr Baker, it’s strongly recommended. Not always pretty but entertaining.
Doug Prentice… Saw him with Cream on the revolving stage at Glasgow Locarno Ballroom and later leading Airforce at Glasgow Apollo – Magnificent.
