plus support! odd support! asks Mark Randall

Mark Randall… Band support acts: Remember the days when support acts at gigs weren’t generic but of a wide variety? I saw Ian Dury at the ( as was) Hammy Odeon in ‘78. 1st spot – Whirlwind ( rockabilly) 2nd – Matumbi ( reggae) 3rd – Max Wall ( national treasure ) Anymore for anymore?

Julian Deeprose… A typical eclectic Ian support bill, another of his favourites was Rico Rodriguez, Cuban/Jamaican trombone player extraordinaire

Stewart Rockett… Julian, Saw Rico with the Specials in the late 1980s, and then twice in Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra at the White Rock Theatre in the late 1990s / early 2000s.

Julian Deeprose… Stewart, He was a real character and a fine player. Aa Ian wrote in “Reasons” “Harpo, Groucho Chico, listening to Rico”

Sean Taylor… Julian don’t forget wreckless Eric

Glenn Piper…When a few of us worked on a Heavy Metal Kids gig at the Marquee Club the support act was Long John Baldry. Let’s just say there were some interesting interactions with the crowd

Mark Randall… Be Bop Deluxe with Lenny Henry. ( Hammy Odeon)

Andy Gunton… Sinead O’Connor supporting INXS at Hammersmith Odeon. Ivor Cutler supporting Van Morrison, also at Hammersmith Odeon.

Graham Belchamber… Tommy Cooper supported The Police at a big gig in a circus tent on Clapham Common. I didn’t go but remember reading about it.

Gerry Fortsch… The Hippo Band supported the Glitter Band on Hasting Pier?

Stuart Moir… So did Centre Page when all the original players were in the band, I remember Revie Stockdale stumbled into his dressing after he’d finished his set and he said he looked like an old man

Mick O’Dowd… I put on Die Laughing at The Carlisle with support The Piranhas. What a miss-match but it proved a great night as each set of fans took to the others. PHEW!

Peter Fairless… Everyone loves The Piranhas, Mick (well, except the APL) and Die Laughing were such laid back guys, I’m sure there was nothing but mutual respect. As I remember, it was a great night!

Alan Pepper… Live Stiffs October 1977 Brighton Top Rank – Ian Dury , Elvis Costello, Wreckless Eric, Nick Lowe, Larry Wallis, Dave Edmunds. A mixed bag but a fantastic night !

Peter Thomson… saw Slade supported by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, The Dome 1973. Didn’t Mott The Hoople tour with Frankie Howerd about that time?
