Favourite Instrumental track.

What’s your favourite instrumental track? 

I  was thinking of The Shadows Apache or Wonderful Land but for something a bit more rockier what about Edgar Winter Frankenstein, Area Code 615 – Stone Fox Chase, Love Sculpture – Sabre Dance.

Andre Martin…..How about this for a start – Dave ” Baby ” Cortez – Rinky Dink original version.Followed by – This great Number that was used by DLT on Radio Caroline as his signature tune The Mood Mosaic – A Touch of Velvet A Sting Of Brass and another great 60’s number Sounds Orchestral Cast your fate to the wind. Van McCoy The Hustle, Earl Van Dyke All Of You, Duane Eddy – Because They’re Young, The Ventures – Perfidia, The Champs – Tequlia, Cliff Nobles & Co – The Horse, Peter Jay & The Jaywalkers – Jaywalker,  Sounds Incorporated – William Tell.

Alan Esdaile….This is Wonderful and deserved to be a bigger hit. Jo Jo Bennett Leaving Rome.

Peter Pursglove….Tornados – Telstar. One of my faves from all time.

Terry Pack….. Telstar with the great Clem Cattini on drums. I think this was the first time a drummer played 16th notes on the high hat on a recording. Peter James Shaw will know.

Sarah Harvey…..Telstar…This reminds me of when I was really young and my mum bought the single (Embassy label I seem to recall). I think it was my uncle who usd to tease us constantly …. when we played it he insisted that each time the Tornados were really playing down the bottom of our garden. A weird sense of humour but we (me and my sister) belived it at the time….or did he really know something that we didn’t?

Patrick Lewis……Pet Sounds from Beach Boys Pet Sounds album and though not strictly an instrumental as there is a vocal section, The Other One by the Grateful Dead. Basically a vehicle for some wonderful instrumental improvisation.

Colin Fox…..I like the Brian May version but this is just as good in my opinion – Sarah Jory – Last Horizon.

Jim Breeds…..Mason Williams – Classical Gas, Dave Brubeck – Take Five, Santana – Samba Pa Ti, Beatles – Cry For A Shadow, Spanish Flea Herb Alpert. Samba Pa Ti was a permanent fixture on the Lord Nelson jukebox back in the day. Constantly being played. That and Free Bird which does not qualify for this thread 🙂

Would also recommend The Incredible bongo Band’s version of “Apache” and add the following: Life on Mars – Dexter Wansel, Another Camden Afternoon – The Stranglers, Cold Duck – Ronnie Laws, The Contender – Lack of Afro, The Selecter – The Selector, Rumble – Link Wray, Interstellar Overdrive – Pink Floyd, Midnight In Moscow – Kenny Ball and a really cheesy one, but no worse for it Cast Your Fate To The Wind – Sounds Orchestral.  How did I forget …. Chris Sambrook……Wishbone Ash: F.U.B.B. [ Live Dates 2.] originally from the album There’s the Rub. or  Man: Sp**k Rock from the Greasy Truckers live at the Round House, Feb 1972. Originally from the album 2 oz of Plastic with a hole in the middle.

Gary Kinch…..I’m with Jim, Samba Pa Ti would be on my list. Here’s one that’s stacked with memories for me, when I listen to this I’m right back there. It is and always has been a track in it’s own right but I’ve always thought of it as an intro and part of Supper’s Ready (still a favourite). I would not play one without the other – Steve Hackett – Horizons live at Nottingham 1990. Also this ones an old fav of mine. Jorma Kaukonen from Jefferson Airplane/Starship and Hot Tuna. We used to listen to a lot of US west coast stuff. Anyway, a lovely song this one IMO.
