EDDIE AND THE 17TH APRIL 1976

Pete Fairless… Not sure if this was their first visit, certainly, the first time I saw them… a mere 50p, what a bargain!

Alan Esdaile… Did they play the pier 3 times Pete or more?

Pete Fairless… Yes, 17th April and 17th July 1976, 18th March 1978, on my list. They didn’t play in 1977 , the year they had a big hit with ‘Do Anything You Wanna Do’ and toured the US. Also, it was the year when the pier hosted The Stranglers, The Clash, The Jam, The Damned, The Adverts… Perhaps, they might have been seen as too ‘popular’?

Nigel Ford… Was at both ’76 gigs to see Barry cart-wheeling across the stage in between singing and bought their TEENAGE DEPRESSION album after the first gig which I’ve played tracks from on Hastings Rock: “Get across to you” & “Double checkin’ woman” from memory? though I think the deck slipped and I had to cut one short…. Dammit! Great to see them again last September too at the BIG GREEN CARDIGAN event.

Pete Fairless… Ah, yes, and Judas Priest on the 23rd. That was a good gig, too!

Virginia Davis… Those were the days. 50p a ticket and no added booking fees!!

Wesley Magoogan… He came on pretending to have only one arm

Tim Moose Bruce… Saw them at the de la warr in bexhill, the Naughty Rythmns tour. Also on that night were John Otway, Dr Feelgood and The Hamsters. 1999 I think.

Peter Fairless… Barrie was such a genuine guy, always had time for the Facebook group. He remembered the pier gigs…

supplied by Peter Millington

Peter Millington….Eric behind the counter at the Pam Dor Early 1960’s.

Mick Knights….That’s the ever popular Eric, the owner, serving. I, along with just about every teenage lad, was banned by him at one time or another!! The Pam Dor had the first Discotec in Hastings, which was on the second floor, a place I never entered, nor did very many, as it soon closed. its second incarnation was the Astral club, which morfed into Toff’s.

Peter Pursglove….i did the door up there for a few years until it closed Alan ,Mollly Russell ran it ,busy little club

Tom Boyer….Great times, we loved it, a fabulous place to meet. Tom & Lin Boyer (nee White)

Sue Bartholomew (Nee Finch)… I remember the Pam Dor, it was the best place to go, we paid a shilling entrance and that also got you a coffee or a frothy hot chocolate, and sit in there for as long as you wanted, it was always busy and behind in Middle Street was a long line of Lambrettas or Vespas belonging to some young lad who was in the Pam Dor.

Colin Bell… Love this photo Pete, met my first ‘proper’ girlfriend there…happy days…

Mick Mepham… Who were your ‘improper’ ones Colin and are you still in touch with them?

Nicola Dobson… Spent a lot of time in there…I remember that seating area..they should have coffee bars again Im sure they would be popular!

The Real Things!

Leigh Mitchell… I thought the same thing (or is it things?!)

Christine Pachner… Thing

Dave Woolmer… Steve Maxted a regular at the Pier and Woodvilles in Gravesend bloody lunatic with his acrobatics and stunts, saw The Real Thing at Hammersmith Odeon in 78.

Barclay James Harvest and Rare Bird. Hastings Pier 22nd June 1974

Nick Webb… I was there again lol

Andy Qunta… Pretty sure I was there for this. Both good bands!

Martyn Baker… you were mate. I remember seeing you in the bar at half-time!

Ian Watling… That was a great night

Peter McLoughlin… Saw Bjh at the pier a couple of years earlier with about 50 other people!!

Anne Murray… Yep, I was at BJH

Catherine Ireland… The guy at the back right of picture looks like Chris Cozens, but I don’t think Chris was born then

Chris Meachen… Bloody excellent night, two brilliant bands.. still have the autographed BJH album..

Roger Dando… Classic band I never managed to see live . . 😕

Mick O’Dowd… When I worked with them on a Martin-Casson gig on the Pier, I did not like rock music much. I introduced the band and went off stage but was waylaid by someone and we talked for a while. When I emerged to cross the dance floor to escape, I was half-way across and they were playing “Mockingbird”. Woah! I liked the sound of this! Stayed and watched the rest of their set. Made me realise that I had a bad case of tunnel vision and from that day have taken all music and given everything at least one listen before rejecting them as c**p! Wise decision as i’ve discovered a lot of bands/artists that I once wouldn’t have given the time of day to. Thank BJH!

Pete Houghton… Hi Mick yes Mockingbird is still one of favourite songs

Andy Davies… I was there too. Can’t have heard anything of their’s since ‘76! Are they worth revisiting?

Alan Esdaile… Andy, Yes definitely.

Pete Houghton… I was there a what great night Both Band’s signed there Autographs for me

Deb Hoad.. Love their music

Carol Cooksey… Love the music of B J H saw them lots of times

Terry Pack… I was at this one. Walked home to Bexhill afterwards as usual. The last train was at 22.37 and I nearly always missed it. I think the last bus was probably at about 7.00pm!! Beer was so cheap in 1974 that I couldn’t spend the £1 I had in my pocket at the start of the evening!

Mike Curtis… I remember going to “Beat Raves” at DLWP in the late 60s. Beer was 2/6 a pint – I used to spend my £1 and have difficulty walking home.

Iain Cobby… Long Live the BJH mellotron, king of orchestral sounds!
