The West Hill Hastings 1972

Alan Esdaile… I spent a lot of my youth here and on the rocks.

Merv Kennard… And climbing into the castle

Colin Bell… Alan, And Me!

Matt Thomas… That’s me doing a roly poly

Steve Hamilton… Me too! I occasionally walk the dog in the area and it still astounds me how fantastically dangerous those rocks were/are. I guess my earliest memory was on a hunt for Mars/Bounty/Marathon/Etc. wrappers to get some free chocolate offer from Sally’s in High Street. Probably about 1976. I guess I would always end up on the rocks in late 70s/early 80s after getting thrown out the arcades below. My grandmother told me to be careful on the hill as it is full of glue-sniffers. I had no idea what that meant – I’m not really sure she did either.

Patrick Turner… You must have gone in the small cave half way down as we did as kids

Dave Nattress… Me too as it was such an interesting place compared to Bexhill! Always fascinated by the funicular railway of course and my first two daughters used to love running round in the rocks – frightening stuff as they were quite young and fearless and there were some deep drops. The caves of course we visited me later playing there with Samisen a couple of times. As so many band members have remarked getting the gear down right into the main gig area in the caves off the road and then back again – what a pain. Great gigs though great memories.

Andy Hemsley… I remember buying Cider Barrel lollies and ‘screwball’ ice creams from that van.

Lindsey Sladden… Those were the days, lovely

Dave Weeks… Hasn’t it changed 😉

Paul Cullen… Pretty much every lunchtime when I was at Priory road, down the hill to the chip shop and round the corner to get 5 Park Drive and then over to the hill. Happy days

Sid Pelling… I was there a few weeks ago

Denise Brace… Good times!
