and local advert…
Shaft Film – Orion Cinema October 1972. Came out in 1971 so may have been shown at the Gaiety Cinema first. I expect Nick Prince might know? Great Soundtrack.
Matt Thomas… Shaft or Chef???
Nick Prince… Had a week in both Classic 1 and 2 during July 1971 and a week at Curzon, St Leonards in September 1971. If the Orion ran a first run film in Hastings it was made very clear in their advertising in between the date/number of days of run and actors/ film title…
Alan Pepper… Who’s that black private dick who’s a sex machine to all the chicks ? SHAFT !! Can you dig it ? I’ve still got the album on the great Stax Label . Great stuff !
Martin Richter… got the album
Tony Court-holmes… I saw it, soundtrack Issac Hayes and Superfly soundtrack Curtis Mayfield. The 2nd track on the lp freddys dead is worth a listen, Nick.

Martin Richter… what a game ! sadly missed
Reg Wood… At the Langham
Joe Knight… Use to be one in the Wheatsheath pub in Bohemia Rd
Jan Warren… Also remember “shove ha’penny” in the pub too!
Jim Breeds… Very popular in the Jenny Lind in the 1970s. Then the landlord (Ron French) swapped it for a pool table. Not the same fun!
Mike Mitchell… Used to play in The Oddfellows Arms..
Maz Marriott… My husband still plays in the league for the Jenny
Michael Wilson… The Fountain St Leonards.
David Edwards… Used to love bar billiards tho’ very few pubs have them now. But I believe the Jenny has one.
Sandy Max… Still play in the Nags Head! I think they got their table from the Fox when it closed. Much more skilful than the ubiquitous American Pool played in most pubs. I believe there may still be a Bar Billiards league?
Pete Prescott… Used to play this a lot ! Great game !
Pauline Richards… Yes. My grandparents used to own the Langham pub and my grandfather used to let me play for free.
Ian Mantel…I used to play at The Princes, now Pissarro’s. The table was in the corner where they now put the drummer on a Friday/Saturday night
Samuel Freeman… Played there good table
Alan Esdaile… I think the first time I played it was at The Angel pub on the West Hill.
Judy Atkinson… I’ve got a board but no pennies or ha’pennies. Great pub game. My dad said they used to make the boards from the old wooden toilet seat covers
Reg Wood… We still play at home.
Kim Thompsett… Used to have shove and darts night at the Sussex. There was a league, it was serious stuff!
Carol Paffett… Still play
Jane Hartley… We had a board at home, still got the pennies somewhere. Played a lot in the Langham too.
Kathy Wood… We got our board out a few weeks ago, had forgotten about it for years
Nathan Honey… Loved playing this with grandad! Good memories
Leigh Wieland-Boys… My parents still have one!
Tony Bowles… Leigh, so do I but don’t have any pennies
Karen Sweatman… Still play this with in laws at Christmas
Mike Waghorne… 50 years ago !
Martin Stoggell… I’ve got one of them. But no one to play with.
Dawn Leaney… There is still a shovepenny league between pubs in Hastings that play on a thursday eve .. not so many teams as there used to be , unfortunately not many younger people are playing so few and few each year. Xx
Tony Court-holmes… used play it all the time all the pubs in the old town used to have a table. The Nelson was the best. Tony Shipley taught me how to play
Val Shoesmith… We have one.
Stephen Moran… I have very fond memories of playing shovepenny in the Nelson during the late seventies!
Pete Houghton… I used to play it when i used to go in my local pub
John Warner… had one in my pub!
Colin Bell… Used to play it with my dad at The Fountain St. Leonards, long before it was a music venue and still a traditional pub, good memories
