Wards Levi advert. What jeans did you wear in the 60’s/70’s?

Alan Esdaile… I’m thinking Brutus or Lee but probably an unknown cheap make, as Levi were too expensive.

Gary Urwin… I only wore blue Levi’s because I thought they were the coolest. I remember wearing them at least once in the bath to shrink them too. I don’t recall that working

Peter Fairless… Lee Cooper, I think

Colin Norton… Levi’s and I still do

Reg Wood… Yes Levi’s Alan

Barry Newton… Whatever I could get cheap at Malcolm Mitchells

Judie Struys… Levis from Cyril Savage in Kings Road. Lay in bath to shrink them. When they got old the zip broke so I made a DIY fly out of a leather thong crisscrossed. It looked OK but wasn’t convenient in the conveniences.

Chris Meachen… I remember you in those…

Arthur Sutherland… Wore cords, couldn’t stand cowboy pants

Ernest Ballard… Levi’s. Cost £4.99. Four weeks paper round money

Eric Harmer… Still wear 501 s

Tony Davies…  I left school when I was fifteen and with my first wage packet from the post office went straight down to Baldocks clothes shop in George St and bought my first pair of 501 stud fly button shrink to fit Levi’s, £2 10shillings. Been wearing Levi’s ever since.

Eric Harmer… How do you remember these things Tony ? Did I go with you to get them ? They are still great jeans. But I think they are different now.

Jim Hobbs… Never, always hated them. Discovered Chinos years ago, nicer material instead of boring jeans that everybody feels they have to wear and look scruffy.

Tony Davies… My dad used to wear chinos and back in 1968 when I was fifteen I just didn’t want to wear the same style of clothes he wore, shirt and tie, blazer and chinos, bless him.

Chris Meachen… Always used to wear Levi’s, later also Lees & Brutus, but kind of gave up on them when the style changed to baggy arse & twisted legs. Cargos are my usual choice these days..

Peter MacDougall… I had Wranglers, with the W embroidered on the back pockets. When I bent over …… WOW !!

Paul Crimin… Brutus in the 70’s…

Peter Brazier…  I want another pair of the ones I had (for best lol) Dark blue 501’s with a white pin stripe! I wore them till they got torn across both knees, threw them away then designer rips came into fashion And I kicked myself for throwing them out

Dave Nattress… Well it was Levi 501’s from 1969 when I was 16. Living in Bexhill they were bought from Peter Jackson on the corner of Wickham Avenue and Sackville Road for £3.2/6, the equivalent of 2 weeks paper round money! Said before on this fabulous site – only came in dark Blue, buttom front flies, copper rivets, stiff as a board, Red tab of course, good quality thick denim, so-called shrink to fit, never really did get that working, and you used to want them faded so it was wear them in the sea, (summertime), bathe in them, many trips to the launderette in Sackville Road to wash them on a serious hot wash, rub them with stones on the beach. Some guys even used to was them in a bleach solution – not the best thing. Before that my ma used to get me Carhartts or something like “Huskies” from Dengates in Cambridge Road. Similar looking actually but much cheaper. Wards had a shop in Bexhill but mainly only ever bought school uniform there. Stopped buying that when I was 40 – the school twigged it!!

Neil Cartwright… Probably Lybro Seadogs, the Brutus, en route to either Levi’s or Wranglers. My first Levi’s denim jacket cost £4.99 from Hayden’s.

Jan Warren… Hey Dave I remember the shop on the corner of Wickham Ave and Sackville Road ……. and I had friends that lived in the flat above the shop …….. also Beaneys record shop opposite, Nonnys boutique and Birds music (still there) …….. Oh, happy daze!!! ….. and btw, I think we all started to get into “Brutus” jeans at the time, also they were cheaper than Levi’s, couldn’t afford them, also remember getting jeans from Tesco (Hastings), cheaper still and remember trying to get the BIGGEST flares I could find??!! haha

Neil Cartwright… Probably Lybro Seadogs, the Brutus, en route to either Levi’s or Wranglers. My first Levi’s denim jacket cost £4.99 from Hayden’s.

Paul Huggett… Cheap ones

David Edwards… Levi’s, my favourites were Lees never a Wranglers fan
