Alan Esdaile… Did mine at Elphinstone School.
Edward Adams… cyclists nowadays should take a test and have a licence
John Gale… It’s about the only certificate I still have passed mine at Sandown
Judy Atkinson… John, me too – or it might have been at the High School
John Gale… Judy, I remember most people passed, apart from one kid who flew over the handlebars during the emergency stop
David Wilkinson… John, Showing off, no doubt. I taught Cycling Proficiency when I was a young teacher in Brighton. The first time, a colleague and I voluntarily did the test, and passed. Thereby showing children later that we were “qualified” !!! It was pre-arranged with the Road Safety team, and the press came too. The children were delighted and possibly highly amused !!! I still have my original badge and certificate, and a handlebar badge from East Sussex. One year, sometime between 1974 and 1978, East Sussex Road Safety held a Safe Cycling Competition at Bexhill. My school represented Brighton and Hove. Did anyone enter such competitions ? My school won a trophy, so again I called in the press !!! Having developed a keen interest in road safety, I moved sideways to work with RoSPA who organised Cycling Proficieny working in Traffic Education. Happy Times.
Sheila Maile… Pity they don’t do it now the amount of cyclists causing havoc to car drivers & pedestrians on footpaths. If they use road should be insured
Han Peterson… Sheila, I did mine, 1st year of secondary… Mine was a second-hand Raleigh bike, went everywhere on it, couldn’t imagine doing that these days…
Alan Esdaile… Here’s my certificate from 1964 and you also got a pendant for your bike.
Marilyn Spence… I got mine at Woodlands Secondary Modern School for Girls Went everywhere on my bike mainly 2 paper rounds and school The print on my pendant ran Probably caused when cycling in the rain
Chris Meachen… Always wanted to do that as a kid, & was a keen observer, but couldn’t afford a bike…
Jo Turner… Chris, me too. Took turns to borrow the one other boy’s bike in the lane.
Phil Dance… Chris, I guess I was one of the lucky ones to own a bicycle. Remember taking my cycling proficiency test around the grounds at Elphinstone school in the 60’s. Used to get a triangular yellow flag when you passed, not sure where you were meant to hang it, as no aerials on my bike!
