ticket supplied by Roger Carey poster supplied by Iain Cobby ad Sarah Harvey
Mick Knights….This was the first time I saw Genesis and as I said in my first post with this group, I remember Gabriel standing behind two antenia like spot lights looking menecing. The last time I saw them was the penultimate concert before Gabriel’s departure, at Wembly arena, where they did the Lamb. The last concert I went to this year was Steve Hackett at the Albert Hall, which was two and three quarter hours of pure nostaiga.
Pete Fisher….back in the days when it was cool to sit cross-legged on the floor at concerts…also still have the ticket!
Glenn Piper….I remember this gig (I know, I know, but it’s true, I do) Peter Gabriel wearing his flower costume etc
Tim Bruce….”Wheres my time machine?…”
Barry M Dyke….I was there with my then girlfriend (now my wife of 40 years), Gill. We both agree that Genesis were nowhere near as good as Budgie. Wasn’t Simon Davies, AKA Tony Kane, doing the disco?
live from Belgian TV 1972 –
Martyn Baker….Completely beautiful. I reckon they were at their peak creatively and energetically just about then.

Sarah Harvey….If I am not mistaken, Budgie’s 1st and 2nd appearance in Hastings. I seem to remember the first gig where Budgie completely blew Genesis away with their performance and were so popular they were asked back the same month.
Alan Esdaile….How corny is the line ‘Be There Or Be Square’ but we probably all used it at that time.
Andy Qunta…I hope that “be there or be square” line wasn’t mine! I believe this was in fact 1971. I was helping the Student Union organize this, so I had a good bit of influence in choosing the bands. Original choice from the list the booking agents sent, was Uriah Heep, but their price had jumped out of the budget since the list was printed. Laurie Cooksey had told me about Genesis, & I then heard & liked them, so we got Genesis – for about 60 quid! We wanted more of a rock band as a contrast, so we got Budgie, for even less! I thought both bands were brilliant, especially Genesis, who remain one of my fave bands! Their latest album at that time was Nursery Cryme. They came back to the Pier the next year when Foxtrot was out, & were even better!
Pete Fisher….Genesis and Budgie was 02.06.72 – still have the ticket with the Hulk design – Budgie blew me away! – also have 30.06.72 listed as Budgie on the Pier, but no ticket. A bumper month for three-piece rock fans!
John Storer…..This was the first proper gig I ever went to (I am discounting seeing The Baron Knights at Billy Smart’s Circus in the 60s). Dave Shirley had bought the first Budgie album and we all loved it. We only went to see Budgie and don’t think any of us had the slightest interest in seeing Genesis. Remember Peter Gabriel wearing some strange flower mask but the music was pretty insipid compared to the brilliant show Budgie put on. The last time I saw Budgie was the night the Sex Pistols supported them and it was their turn to be blown off stage by the support band. I rarely listen to old music these days but do occasionally load the iPod up with the first five Budgie albums for a bit of nostalgia. Few bands have more than three decent albums in them, but Budgie definitely did. Dave Shirley was our musical guru back then … as well as Budgie, he also introduced us to Montrose, Gryphon, and Patto (amongst many others) and I stilll have those albums today. Do I give him credit for Ted Nugent as well, or was that Kev Potter? The rest of my musical education back in the early 70s came from Colin Jarvis’s brothers record collection … the usual suspects – Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin, Cream – but also The Groundhogs, Blodwyn Pig, Chicken Shack, etc.
Andy Qunta…..As amazing as I thought Budgie were, & I saw them several times & loved them, Genesis have been probably my favorite band of all time since I first saw them at this Pier gig! Last time I saw them was in 2007 & they were at least as brilliant! I guess I’m in the minority, but that’s OK!
Gary Kinch…..Me too………. Much preferred Genesis.
Eric Cawthraw…..Budgie always said it was there best place to play outside Cardiff! I’d like to think that was true
Jim Hobbs…..Bout time Genesis turned it on again.
Phil Thornton……Budgie were great but I agree with Andy Q, Genesis on the Pier was rather special ! I saw them twice on the Pier and 4 or 5 times up in London the most memorable gig was at Drury Lane, great performance of course but the atmosphere in the audience was electric and the setting was just right !
Steve Amos……I met Steve Hackett recently and he couldn’t remember playing on Hastings pier! Lovely guy though.
Mick Knights…..The CD and DVD of the Steve Hackett Albert Hall concert I went to last year arrived last week, the DVD hasn’t been off the player since! Looking forward to seeing him again at the Brighton center in October.
Yvonne Cleland…..I saw Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in London somewhere, Phil. Could have even been Earl’s Court.
Mick Knights……Saw them doing the Lamb at Wembly arena, it was one show before Gabriel left.
Sarah Harvey… Not sure if you heard Darren Reddick’s show on Planet Rock on Wednesday, but the 3pm trilogy was Genesis but he imparted the story story I sent him where I DIDN’T see Genesis for the first time. The Budgie / Genesis gig on the pier where I missed the whole of the Genesis set because I was talking to Budgie in the bar.
Nick Hill… good old budgie ;))
George German… If anybody still has a ticket or poster from this show, please let me know. I’m interested in buying/trading for them. Thanks, George. george610@prodigy.net
Chris Meachen… The incredible hulk poster was done by dear departed Andy Strickland, a real character who used the most profane language in the poshest accent you could imagine…
Kev Towner… I bet that was a cracking gig – but I was only 10!!
Gavin Martin… Budgie tickets going cheep cheep.
Chris Giles… Sigh went to this.
Andy Qunta… One of the best and most memorable gigs I’ve experienced! Very inspiring!
Keith Veness… Great night
Nick Andrews… The first of at least 2 great Genesis gigs on our pier, all fronted by Peter Gabriel in various outrageous costumes, the most memorable being the foxes head and matching full length gown. Phil Collins was on drums then, of course.
Andy Phillips… I saw both bands lots of times in London back then, BUT you also had GO GO GIRLS. Hastings, always had it’s finger on the, er, pulse.
Alan Esdaile… Don’t remember the go go girls at this gig? Anyone?
Andy Phillips… I see it was promoted by Hastings college of further education, perhaps the feminist society objected and the girls were pulled (groan) from the bill. Who knows
Nick Andrews… I’m sure I would have remembered Go Go Girls if there had been any. Wishful thinking Andy?
Alex… Hi I’d love to have that poster for Genesis and would pay £250 if that’s of interest? Also interested in any other local posters. Cheers Alex – 07890 626 840
Tony Court-holmes… I was there so were you Glen
Peter Houghton… It was a great night, Budgie were great
Nigel Ford… Pretty sure this was my 1st sighting of Budgie and loved it, going into Disc Jockey next day and was surprised to see their 1st album and recognised song titles from the night before especially “Homicidal Suicidal” so came away with that. The following band were so boring I walked out, yes it WAS Genesis and still have no time for them. Saw Budgie many times there after that and at Saturday’s, George St. and of course Battle Memorial hall where our son Luke’s band NOXIOUS supported them. Burke broke 2 bass strings on separate occasions that eve and I have them both aswell as all my LPs signed by the then members, Simon Lees on lead and Pete Boot (I think?) on drums. Great sound mixing from Bernie Martin that eve as always, my works neighbour for many years.
Harry Randall… Bumped into one of them along seafront carrying his Guitar asked him what band he was in and in a broad accent replied “Budgie”
