Milletts Castle Street Hastings photos by David Frasi

David Frasi… Photographs of the Castle Street Milletts, window dressing was done by Roy Hale who used to travel down by train from Ealing (the HO was based there) several times a year, sadly passed away in the 80’s. He was a wonderful signwriter, doing all the price point tickets with a paint brush! Into the 80’s the name changed from ‘Milletts’ ( after Peter Millett died and his sons Nigel and Trevor took over and expanded the family business) to ‘Cheapjacks’ then to just CJ’s. I would date the black and white ones around 1974/75, colour ones a couple of years later.

Franky Appleman… Great shop

Dennis Torrance… Got most of my clothes there in the 70s

Merv Kennard… My brother worked in there for a couple of years at weekends, and the manager Dave used to give me staff discount.

Stephen Moran… I bought my first pair of Levi’s in there. They were £3/2/6!

Nigel Kennard… I worked there at weekends in the mid 1970’s with Roger Barton and Peter (?), and the manager Mick. Dave joined later on and we had some great laughs during quiet days in the week. Joined full time for a year after leaving school and before the civil service caught me.

The Blue Saloon chip shop. c.1970s

Paul Cullen… Best chip shop when George had it

Jacqueline Marsh… That was my grand dad’s fish n chip shop back in the 40’s – 50’s. Bill Shirley he went on to have the Duke of Wellington public house known as The Silver Dollar by the old baths and wash house back of the Hastings wall. In those days the fish and chip shop had a third floor where we kids were sent when our mums worked down below. There were 5 girls and 1 son. All the girls worked at one time or other for their mum and dad. They were known as the Shirley girls and they were all very glamorous and very stylish back in the day

Graham Sherrington… Such Memories Jacqueline

Andy James Long… Is that what is now the Blue Dolphin chip shop?

Dudley Mendenhall… yep and still is I do believe, not been home for a few years now. That’s my mum and nan with my uncle Dick with me being held by nan.

Fred Marsh… I wonder why they knocked it down, was there no listing?

Tony Court-holmes… it burnt down

Jeff McCall… My grandmother worked there. Mabel Eldridge.

Peter Ellingworth… Photo from before 1971- note pre decimal money still in use then. Dates from early to mid sixties I would think.

Dudley Mendenhall… that’s about 1971-72. It’s my family

Peter Ellingworth… The UK changed over to decimal currency in mid-Feb. 1971, so I would have thought the photo was no later than that- although if you remember signage in the old currency was still displayed in some places for a time afterwards.

John Storer…..Was at both these gigs – remember a ship floating across the stage at some point during the Arthur Brown gig – only a small one, mind! May have been where Spinal Tap got the idea for their pyramids 🙂

Phil Gill….Arthur Brown was awesome. He sat there behind that Bentley Ace analogue drum machine and scared the shit out of me right from the first song, “Time Captives”. I loved it.

Philip Thornton….agreed ! – the heart beat at the start went on for ages and then started speeding up !! class ! Mr Brown is a top class guy ! – and yes he has still got it big time ! – check out his performance on ‘Pollen’ by Mandragora if you get the chance !!

Mick Mepham….Ace track! He still has the voice too ……. and to start with, he was a soul singer ……

Philip Meston….Love the album ‘Journey’ from Kingdom Come, it’s an absolute classic!

Mick O’Dowd….First saw Arthur at Pilot Field Hastings in 67 with Kinks, Dave Dee, Geno Washington etc. Must have been a couple of weeks before he caught Fire!

Eric Cawthraw… I was with my old mate John Storer for both the Arthur Brown and Budgie gigs – so fond memories. The thing about the ship floating along the back of the stage – it was quite bizarre and theatrically it looked very Edwardian. There were long boards going right across, painted and shaped like waves and these were pulled back and forth to give a moving ocean effect. The ship was placed among them and rocking to and fro! We were definitely in a non computer age for graphic scenery!

Chris Meachen… Had to prevent the bouncers chucking Arthur off the pier.. He might have ‘over medicated’ & was looning about in the amusement arcade being strange….

Robert Searle… aw Arthur at the Saville Theatre supporting Jimi Hendrix with Carl Palmer on drums

Tony Court-holmes… saw Budgie a couple of times

Stan Atkinson… Certainly a character, was an interesting evening. Budgie were a brilliant band saw them several times on the pier and they were always excellent

Pete Houghton… What a great times for Both Band’s The first time i saw Arthur Brown we all had to sit on chairs and the second time we all stood around and both times i got the band to sign something And Budgie signed something for me

Dave Weeks… Always loved a Budgie gig.

Tracey Birrell… I remember it well. Also when he sang Fire he set his head alight and walked around. Elf and Safety wouldn’t allow that now!
