St Margaret’s Road car park 1962

Leigh Kennedy… On the 11th May 1962 the Mayor, Alderman Cecil Barfoot J.P opened St Margaret’s road Car Park. The first car park in Sussex to use an automated ticket machine (called the trust the motorist system). All car parks previously had had an attendant who took payment in person. The car park cost £5,250 to complete. The mayor is seen purchasing the first ticket, watched by councillor Tom Mears (chairman highways and works committee) and Chief Constable D.L Brown, the car is a 1960 Armstrong Siddeley Star Sapphire Limousine, one of only 73 made.
