Roy Penfold… We’ve had a discussion about this building over in the Historical Hastings group and it would appear to have been demolished in the late 1970s/early 1980s. There is a modern house now on the site with the same name and the allotments off Rotherfield Avenue carry on the name of Fernbank.
Mick O’Dowd… 2 of my 3 children were born there. Always remember the ward floor sloping towards the window. Scary!

After that you were a seasoned baby machine so they’d send you to Fernbank Maternity Home. Lol. Mum said.. back then during the summer…you’d pop yr baby out and in hours you’d be sunbathing in the garden knitting booties. Lol. Sounds Fab! Lol

The only way we could see mum and our new little sister was to gaze above while mum stood at a window with Valerie in her arms

Patricia Burgess… My youngest daughter as born here April 1973, we emigrated to Canada 6 months later, when visiting In 2002 went to see it , only to find it demolished. Such a lovely friendly environment not like the Buchanan where our oldest was born
Paul Sutcliffe… I’ve just come across my Birth Certificate whilst having a clear out. I was born there in July 65. Now live in Salford. Just googled Fernbank and this came up, nice and recent. Left Hastings in 81 to join the RN and never came back to live only ever to visit. Not sure why but my parents bought me up to hate my home town. OK not the best place in the 70’s but I’m extremely proud to come from there and always look forward to going back.
