Mick O’Dowd… Always remember the track Jack The Ripper from when I worked at Iorio Dimascio’s( now the Italian Way) when I was still at school. They had a video juke box upstairs( the only one I ever saw) and it had this on it with accompanying film. The tag on the machine saying which track was which was removed because the management thought that it was too frightening for children. We used to play it when no one else was around. I’ve got a copy of this on standard 8 colour/sound film but unfortunately cannot play it anymore.

Peter Fairless… …and look who’s here next week!

Andre Martin…. Yes those were the days !!

Lloyd Johnson… Went to both of those gigs

Here’s the autograph copy that Clive Richardson got signed at The Granary Club in Rye in the 70’s

Ian Gillan Episode Six – Hastings Pier

source from: Tonny Steenhagen. Unknown photographer.

Deep Purple Appreciation Society say… I was hunting for old pics taken on Hastings pier the other day (one of my other projects is researching commercial outdoor portrait photography 1920 – 1960!), after all the press given to the new award winning pier building there. I quickly got diverted by pictures of Episode Six who not only played a number of one-nighters clubs in Hastings, but also appeared in the Pier Ballroom itself in 1968. This unseen shot of IG was taken on Hastings Pier by one of the band’s fan-club members earlier that day, and was sent to me by Tonny Steenhagen. I think this shelter was one of the only buildings to survive the fire a few years ago and has now been restored. Time for another blue plaque?

Jim Breeds… That’s possibly the biggest business card I’ve ever seen.

Pete Fairless… Great find. I think the description is mistaken, though. I’d say, this was taken further down the pier. What do you think?

Alan Esdaile… Yes definitely further down the pier Pete. Trying to look through the window, looks like the doors before you reach the bar possibly? Pete Brazier maybe able to confirm?

Andy Pilkington…  hazarding a guess thats by the old penny arcade

Roy Penfold… I would say the same as Alan – most definitely the windows adjacent to the Penny arcade and just before the bar on the old town side of the pier.

Jim Breeds… He probably stepped outside to have a smoke on the water.

Pete Brazier… Yes I Can!..………(pause for dramatic effect lol)…….. The give away is the little casement window at the extreme left (as you look at it) “it’s the side window to the little caff at the end of the pier, before the lobby with the duel stair cases to the upper ball room and the second lobby with the Pub on the Pier, Toilets and main ballroom doors, just too his left are the windows to the Lady’s toilets and then the anglers club! In the red Circle!…

Rad Cheslav… Hi I try to find an email address or contact with dear Tonny Steenhagen. Maybe he has the Ian Paice interview from Disc Magazine 1972 on July 15. Best wishes.

Sam Wright… My late mums lighting shop (Ritelights) just visible in this photo! The t-shirt shop was next door, thanks for sharing

Andy Gunton… I was sent this photo by a friend earlier, I think it’s from January 1964? He found it while doing some musical research, not sure where.

Andre Martin… For some reason it’s been printed on red, this was the second visit from the boys in 1964

Alan Esdaile…  The only other thoughts I have is, was it an ad in a What’s On type magazine?

Jill Caine… Awwwww memories!! I woz there.

Mick O’Dowd… This is a colour version of the Observer ad.

Mick Knights… I  do remember that I couldn’t afford the 2/6 entrance!

Martin Richter… rolling who…..?

Jill Caine… I was there. behind the bar until the Stones came and then into the ballroom to see them!!!

Glenn Piper… Pity I was only 7 at the time

Gavin Martin… Long haired layabouts .. They look like gurls. I wouldn’t let my great grandmother anywhere near them

Pauline Lindsay… I was there to and remember it well.

Helen Kingshott… I was there to

Peter Fairless… Their Decca EP was released the day before, ‘Bye Bye Johnny’ and ‘Money’ on the ‘A ‘ side, ‘Poison Ivy’ and this on the ‘B’ side. One of our favourites…

Terry Haddon… Me as well Pauline, great night

Bob Laurie.. Opened with “King Bee” as I remember! Cycled over from Bexhill in the freezing cold to see!

Robert Andrew Hale… Bob, Thank you for that info, I’m a big Stones fan, brought up in St Leonards, but was only just born in 64, first got to see them in 82… began with “King Bee”? fascinating, do you remember anything else? Thank you again …

Bob Laurie… I only remember that It’s All Over Now was the current single and was impressed by Keith’s waistcoat. He was playing a red semi-acoustic – perhaps an Epiphone.

Lloyd Johnson… I was there…saw them twice on the Pier….they arrived in an Ambulance and ran up the left side of the Pier to the ballroom. I saw them jump out of the ambulance whilst we were queuing to get in….

David Bargioni… Yep, I was there too.

Chris Jones… I interviewed them for the Observer. They were not very pleasant to a young reporter, with the exception of Mick, who was very pleasant.

Mick O’Dowd.….What an excellent band they were. I remember seeing them and being well impressed. Impressed enough to buy there one and only album(I believe) on Major Minor label? They dropped “The Coloured” tag a bit later but does anybody know what happened to them after that.

Andre Martin…..I think it was on the way home from this gig, they were involved in a road accident and one member of the band was killed, when a badly packed speaker cabinet moved a hit one of them on the head .Here is the Observer write up from that Saturday 29 June 1968.

Tia Mara… Research Black Velvet Band in which 4 members continued as the band.

Marcia Coke… I’m looking for Brian if anyone know’s of his whereabouts.

Pete Fisher… Found this in a blog…they started as the coloured raisins in London ’66.BRANDIS vcls(a.k.a. Brian Clarke /Clark),DAVID & KEITH GAMPORT gtrs,PETER NELSON org & LONDON STEEL dr all came from the west indies & enlarged their line-up to an 8 piece. With the help of HONEY DARLING, KING OSSIE & EARL GREENE vcls & under different names such as The coloured raisins w. King Ossie Show & Honey Darling they re- portedly became 1 of the most booked up London outfits during ’67/68. Anyway, by autumn ’67 they had shortened their name just to the Raisins & finally became Black Velvet in June ’69. However, they still released records under the coloured raisins moniker & also occasionally teamed up w. a guy called RAM JAM HOLDER.

Mike… Saw the coloured raisins when I was about 15/16 . Saw them a few times after that absolutely brilliant. I’m pretty sure I first saw them at the alphabet club but not 100per cent sure of that . I was from Hampshire but used to go all over up west down the coast ( shoreline club) . Loved the mingo, tiles the subway and the twenties . What times.

Jim Breeds… Did Coloured Raisins had a secret life as the Sultanas of Swing?

Sandra Lott… I saw them at the Beckenham Ballrooms (next to Beckenham junction) in 1966 or 1967, I think they sang ” Black Pearl”, but can’t remember for sure. I was very impressed by them.

Skip Bifferty – Hastings Pier 24th February 1968

supplied by Sarah Harvey

Sarah Harvey…  Skip Bifferty on the Pier (February 24th, 1968). A psychedelic band formed in early 1966. Band members were…Graham Bell: vocals – Mick Gallagher: Keyboards – Colin Gibson: bass – John Turnbull: guitar, vocals – Tommy Jackman: drums. Following their demise in 1971 , together with , Bell, Turnbull and Gallagher, formed Bell & Arc. Bassist Colin Gibson went on to work with Ginger Baker, Bert Jansch, Alvin Lee and Van Morrison. John Turnbull and Mick Gallagher reappeared in 1977 in The Blockheads, backing Ian Dury; in 1979 Gallagher played and recorded with The Clash and The Only Ones.

Mick Mepham…  Haven’t heard On Love since we played it in Die Laughing. Great song!

Terry Huggins… They were also known as ‘Heavy Jelly’ and had a song called ‘I keep singing that same old song’ on the ‘Nice enough to eat’ sampler. Can’t recall what the story behind this was, but apparently there were several bands using the ‘Heavy Jelly’ name.

Phil Thornton… that was a great song !! written by Colin Gibson !! When we had a revival of Stallion recently we had planned to play a new version of ‘I keep singing that same old song’ as an encore !!

Terry Huggins… One of the best piano riffs ever.

Kev Towner… Now that would’ve been cool Phil!! I had no idea Colin wrote it – I think I’ve got a copy somewhere.

Sarah Harvey… Heavy Jelly…… Skip Bifferty had been clandestinely recording a new single “I Keep Singing That Same Old Song” with Paul Nicholls replacing Tommy Jackman on drums and with producer Guy Stevens at the helm. Writers of the London magazine ‘Time Out’ had written a review of a fictitious band with the name of Heavy Jelly as a spoof and a number of bands contemplated using the name. Skip Bifferty managed to be first out and the Heavy Jelly single was released on Island. For a while it was rumoured to be Spooky Tooth moonlighting, but journalist Chris Welsh almost disclosed the true identity of the group when his review punned “this one really skips and biffs along”. The single didn’t sell in the UK but did well in Europe.

Mick O’Dowd… Only just recently caught up with listening to this group. Most impressed especially their version of I Am The Walrus. Good band.

Wendy Wells… I have their autographs somewhere, I got from this gig, I’ll try and look them out lol!

Steve Cooke… … and of course Colin Gibson has lived locally for many years, forming Buick 6 with Roger Hubbard and Liam Genockey as well as numerous other musical and artistic achievements.

Gavin Martin… Good band!

Carol Ann Bolton… Excellent.

Nigel Ford… Never knew that….thanks everyone… “I keep singing that same old song” by Heavy Jelly was part of a set of covers by Maidstone band KRISHNA KUDU who played at Battle dances a number of times around 1969 – 72 and were a crowd favourite, even courted two Battle girls. I bought “Nice enough to eat” LP when I saw the track listed on it and have played it on Hastings Rock Radio many years ago.
Krishna Kudu were the first band I saw to use strobe lighting and I believe only to this track.  They also covered Rare Bird’s “Flight – As your mind flies by” brilliantly and “Hammerhead” aswell as Deep Purple, Black Sabbath covers etc.

Tich Turner… Ha, only just seen this. I was at the Skip Bifferty gig and was blown away. I went and bought their album right away and still have it. [probably their only one]! I’ve known Colin Gibson for many years now and only in the past year did I discover he was in the band, brilliant. Hi Mick, hope you’re well. I’m assuming you meant Spooky Tooth recording ‘I Am The Walrus’ as opposed to Skip Bifferty. I was chatting to my old pal and former guitarist in Whiskey Mac recently, and we got round to talking about Spooky Tooth, I absolutely loved that band and have all their albums, and solo ventures. So I mentioned to Graham that I went to see them at The Witchdoctor, and how great they were. He laughed and said, “of course you saw them there, we were supporting them”! Doh!!! Tich Turner.

Colin Bell… ‘On Love’ was one of my favourite 60’s singles, I’ve played it many times on my radio shows.
