Jacquie Hinves… Pre Tescos it was Victor Values! Mum would shop there every Tuesday and collect her green shield stamps.

Jane Hartley… Jacquie, Victor Values was along where the old Argos shop is. Tesco was a beautiful hotel with a revolving door

Pearl Phillips… Jane, your right first Tescos was next to Demarcos and book shop just a small one.

Jane Hartley… Jacquie, we always did our shopping in Victor Values where the old Argos building is. The hotel was demolished for Tesco, then the indoor market and now Poundstretcher. I worked for Acres the bakers and helped out in Tesco on their bakery stall. Jane, that’s right, a small store which we also used, then it moved to the hotel site. Victor Value did pink stamps, Tesco had greenshield stamps.

Linda Gowans… From earlier times. I’ve no idea why I have it – never stayed there. Probably via a charity shop.

Amanda Hilton… I had a part time job there from 13-17 loved it

Peter Houghton… Remember it well

Fred Marsh… Had my first Saturday job there, home n wear upstairs, hated it

Eileen O’Toole… Remember it well I think Ronnie Corbett opened it if my memory is right

Yvonne Webster… When at college worked Fri evening & Saturdays upstairs there. Collected enough green sheild stamps to get Xmas presents for the family one year.

Stuart Moir… Shopped there many time when I first moved to Hastings from the big smoke.

Diane Leigh… Remember it well.

Janet Brophy… I remember that, wow

Teresa Goacher… I got my first bra here

Alan Wood… The beginning of the end

Jan Warren… Used to shop there when I lived in Middle Street, early 70s

Amanda Russell… I worked there till it moved …Great memories.

Andrew Hook… Jeans upstairs, £2.50 a pair, never fitted very well.

Chris Baker… First of many in every town! Life eh?

Alan Esdaile… May have just been me but I remember the lights being so bright upstairs, it was painful to your eyes!

Anita Medhurst… Had a Friday evening and Saturday job there

Dick Btown Vinceb… I did part time evening work there while at Hastings college.

Were you a Rocker or a Mod?

Ad from Paul Anderson via Lloyd Johnson’s Original Modernists Facebook page.

Alan Esdaile… I would have liked to think I was a rocker, mind you I certainly liked many of the mod records.

Gerry Fortsch… I would agree, I had some motor bikes but my mates still liked Buddy Holly and Twinkle, I liked the Yardbirds, The Animals,The Small Faces and a lot of blues.

Lloyd Johnson… I guess I was more of a Modernist/ Mod..there was a split second in 63/64 some mates from Tunbridge Wells and I were calling ourselves ‘Stylists’ ,pretentious , but we we’re try to avoid the yob elements of both sides…

Chris Sambrook… The Who confused me. They were from the Mod culture and yet they played rock good and hard. There must have been the same Mod/ Rocker influence, or was there or am i wrong ? Whatever the Who are still my favourite band since the 60’s and i was only 12. Well i remember Ready Steady Go at 6pm and the weekend starts here No Speed, no dancing and no drink went to beddy bye bo bo’s dreaming of Keith Moon.

Martyn Baker… Mods.

Lloyd Johnson… For me The Who and Small Faces were late comers as the Modernist style for me began with my first Italian style bumfreezer brown suit made at Burton’s by The Memorial and my Denson side lace winklepickers purchased from Winters in George street in The Old Town in 59/60….1 was 14/15 at the time and dreamt of the day I had a wardrobe full of clothes I bought from my own money….hence 3 paper rounds….I also bought some light grey slimline trousers with 1″ slits up the bottom of the side seams from Huckles on Queens Parade which backed on to the cricket ground….I use to love the bus depot between the magistrates court and the entrance to the cricket ground….can anyone remember the Dengate buses on Wellington Square…cream with a green flash on the sides?….all the bus drivers wore off white linen jackets and had separate packs of different coloured tickets attached to a wooden block/ ticket holder by a spring .Those buses and the whole set up looked like they were still in the 1920s/30s…and drivers reminded me of Benny Hill with their oversized caps….funny what we remember isn’t it?….

Alan Esdaile… Yes remember well the bus depot by the cricket ground and also the buses in Wellington Square.

Martyn Baker… Mods.

Mick O’Dowd… Mod. Now a skinhead though!

Carol Anne… Definitely rocker

GRACIOUS

ticket supplied by Pete Fisher

Alan Esdaile… Didn’t it annoy you when you handed in your prized ticket that you wanted to keep for a souvenir and they ripped it in half. Gracious were a Great band.

Geoff Peckham… I agree Gracious were a great band. Saw them at the college and was mesmerised by the lengthy pieces and the mellotron. Factory supported them twice on the pier, this one included.

Mike Curtis… I have two of their LPs. Worth quite a bit I believe – but I’m not parting with them…..

Dave Nattress… Whilst the memory is SO SKETCHY on this, I went to this concert, either at the college or one of those on the pier – such a long time ago. I had a gig poster for many, many years on my bedroom wall when I lived at my parent’s house, of what I think was a pier gig or all-lighter maybe with definitely Gracious, Pink Fairies and 2/3 other bands. One was “Strife” possibly another was “Total” but I’m sure it wasn’t “Total Strife” (as a band name). I think Factory were maybe one of the other bands on the line-up – sorry Geoff – I went to many of your gigs but it was such a long time ago!! Anyone with better memories? I so, regret losing the poster and unlike so many have not hung on to gig tickets etc.

Martyn Baker… I remember helping STRIFE (from Liverpool?) on and off the pier with their equipment (on the pier trolley). Their roadies got us in the gig for free and also promised to get us a drink too, but that never materialised – could be because myself, Paul Guimbeau and Chris Wood were only very young.

Gary Kinch… I remember the Gracious album, I seem to remember Steve had it and maybe 1 or 2 mates had a copy.

Alan Esdaile… Still got both Gracious albums which have been played to death.

Geoff Peckham…  I’ve just discovered that Factory were playing this night too! A quote from Andy’s diary: “March 12th at Hastings Pier for £5. Last minute booking for Hastings College dance, backing Gracious and Pink Fairies. Only 1 45 minute set. Fairies almost booed off. We got good applause from crowd of about 400. Encouraging reactions from people.” I remember it fairly well. The Fairies were quite stoned. I had a chat with one of Gracious’ roadies. He was articulate and posh sounding and was about to resign after a gruelling tour of W. Germany. We’d find out about that sort of thing later!

Iain Cobby… I remember Steve yo bro, coming back after catching Gracious doing a sound check on the pier. He said they were really good like an early Genesis with lots of Mellotron and pomp. Years later I bought a double CD with both of their opus in one . Bit disappointed. perhaps they were better live?

Geoff Peckham… I know what you mean, Iain. I bought the same CD, having lost the LP years ago, and although some of the magic’s still there, there are some fairly cringeworthy bits; eg the words in “Dream”. But nothing matches actually seeing them live at Hastings College in 1970. I thought they were amazing. I’d never heard live mellotron before, and the long pieces were so engrossing and riveting; a new experience for this impressionable 17 year old!

Andy Qunta… Fabulous!

Bernard Goffredo… I went to that gig probably with Pete Fisher

Lee Evans… The Fairies were one of my all time favourites …

Iain Cobby… I can see the influences Geoff. I just love Amulci and Howard. Great prog tracks. Great band, Factory!

Phil Thornton… would have loved to have been at this one ! – I loved all 3 bands !! – imagine hearing ‘blood red Sun’, Walk don’t run and Time Machine on the same night !

Martyn Baker… I wasn’t allowed to go. Mum & Dad said no way, as I was 12. Wanted to though!

James Turner… I seem to remember The Pink Fairies in Hyde Park a very long time ago.

Tony Court-holmes…I remember that night i think

Vaughan T-W… I was on the students union back in those days and along with fellow students from the (mainly) art department, heavily involved in booking the bands. I remember long and earnest discussion about Gracious because of the mellotron – was it an existential threat to backing musicians everywhere or just a great instrument in the right hands? Gracious and the mellotron won the argument and were a firm favourite across the college circuit. I don’t remember much about the Pink Fairies except at the time they were the loudest band I’d heard – I made the mistake of being stood in front of one of their speaker stacks as they started their set.

Geoff Peckham… Hi Vaughan. Long time…….! Jaffa here. I probably had these ‘earnest discussions’ with you, being a big Gracious fan doubtless urging you to book them again! Hope all’s good with you

Barry Taylor R.I.P. (May 2023)

Very sad news Barry Taylor has passed away. Music promoter and band manager and in recent years raising funds for St Michael’s Hospice and other charities. All round nice guy. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Eric Harmer… Great photo. Great friend. RIP Barry Taylor

Froggie Froggie… Eric, sorry about your friend.RIP

Andy Gunton… That’s sad news. He was a nice guy. Very sad. For me he’ll always be the man who booked the Sex Pistols to play on Hastings Pier in 1976. That’s quite something to be remembered for, although I know there’s much more to celebrate.

Peter O’Donnell… Lovely Man I am sad to hear this

Elaine Roberts… So sorry to read this sad news. A lovely man. RIP Barry

Alan King… I was in a documentary film about Davy Graham with him and Pete Brown about 8 or 9 years ago – now both dead within days of each other – dunno if the film ever saw the light of day – Barry had been the manager of Steamhammer back in the day and only this tuesday I dug out some old live recordings of them to rip/burn and send to him

Neil Roberts… Very sad news. Barry was such an passionate enthusiast for local music

Andre Martin… A sad day, a great chap who did so much for various charity events in the town. He will be missed by many, RIP Barry and I will raise a glass to you at the next opportunity.

Nicholas Bragger… Cancer is….well shit no other word can describe it

Julian Graff… So sorry to hear this. Barry was such an energetic supporter of local music and charities. Condolences to all who were close to him. Julian.

Chris Meachen… Bugger, a great mate & all round nice bloke.. Genuinely saddened by this news..

Lee Hill… Sad news indeed, Barry was always supportive of The Other Band’s efforts which we greatly appreciated.
Will be missed.

Jacquie Hinves… A sad day for us all to hear of Barry’s death. Rest in eternal peace Barry. A true Hastings legend.

Mick Mepham… He was a grand guy with a lovely sense of humour, a good mate and a big supporter of cricket. An all-round good man. I haven’t seen him for a couple of years but I’m going to miss him.

Chris Slade… I thought he’d gone a bit quiet! And, he would have laughed at that comment too!… First met Barry when I auditioned to join the founding lineup of Steamhammer… Thanks for agreeing to give me the job Barry! He kept on trying to get as much of the early line-up together again… Sorry we didn’t follow it through Barry! Safe onward journey! CSx

Eric Harmer… Lovely man

John Wilde… Journey on in peace Barry .
