Martin Stringer passed away (May 2022)
Martins son has just posted this on Martins facebook page … Dear Friends and Family, As you may know Martin was recently diagnosed with cancer. It is with huge sadness that Vicki and Jonathan are sharing with you that Martin passed away peacefully this morning after a short but brave fight. So proud of him and all the fun he created! Martin will be hugely missed by us all and we will keep you posted on how we will celebrate his life of music, magic and laughter. Sleep tight. x
Huggy Leaver… So sad one of the good guys, RIP x
Alan Esdaile… Very sad news. I probably knew Martin from when I was 16 and our paths would cross over the years. I would bump into him at the NEC in Birmingham, Earls Court, Business Design Centre and all sorts of places. He did come to the SMART meeting awhile ago and did some amazing tricks from his magic show. He always seemed to have a happy smile on his face. One of the good guys. R.I.P. Martin x

John Logie Baird remembered

Hastings and Area Past and Present… On 14th August 1888, television pioneer John Logie Baird was born in Dumbartonshire. He died on this day, 14th June 1946 in Bexhill aged just 57. In early 1923, and in poor health, Baird moved to 21 Linton Crescent, Hastings, on the south coast of England and later rented a workshop in the Queen’s Arcade in the town. Baird built what was to become the world’s first working television set using items including an old hatbox and a pair of scissors, some darning needles, a few bicycle light lenses, a used tea chest, sealing wax and glue that he had purchased.
Alan Esdaile… He should be celebrated more locally and have a dedicated major attraction to him.
Fiona Evans… Yes, we should make more of our local history & culture. Most famous date in history, birthplace of TV, May bank holiday celebrations, pirates, Alan Turin etc. Could we not impress upon the council to do more/encourage entrepreneurs to make more of Hastings?
Marcus de Mowbray… Hastings: Home of TV, Home of lousy TV reception!
Kate Recknell-Page… I remember coming home from Guides with Heather one night to find mum & dad sitting in darkness watching TV in black/white on a 14” John Logie Baird – our very first TV !!! Wow
Mike Waghorne… Baird House was by Bexhill station it has been knocked down and replaced by a block of flats aptly named Baird House !
Andy Qunta… What we would have missed without his invention!
Colin Bell… Andy, Why does Charlie’s Angels come to mind?!..
John Beeching… His invention was a bit of a flop. (There was nothing on worth watching.)
Kate Recknell-Page… Our first TV as a kid was a 14” black/white JLB my sis & I came back from Guides one night to find the house in darkness & our mum & dad watching the tv (which we knew nothing about till then) such great memories- happy days

Alan Esdaile… Great shop. Where staff were always happy to help you.
John Gale… I remember in the 80s a guy selling from there wearing a brown(Arkwright style)overall cost. Really nice guy.
Martin Richter… an absolute goldmine of a shop – especially downstairs
Fiona Evans… Ditto, wonderful shop & lovely staff.
Pauline Richards… Paul Demayo would sharpen your lawnmower blades in the other shop in the road behind!
David Martin… Fabulous shop front
Chris Meachen… Loved Moseleys, still have chef’s knives I bought there. Proper hardware shop, sadly lacking the like of today…
Gaz Linch… It was possible to buy just about any size of nut, bolt, screw, washer as a single item,if that was all you needed . Sad day when it closed.
Eileen O’Toole… I remember those days
Roger Simmonds… Wonderful old shop sadly missed!
Julie Findlay-jones… Used to get my chefs knives sharpened in there.
Malcolm McDonald… Is that where I used to get keys cut years ago
Peter Ellingworth… Remember it well….any idea around when this photo was taken ?
Nigel Ford… John, probably the son Bill Mozely, I knew him for many years as he married the eldest Relf girl Sue from Battle.
John Wilde… Does anyone remember the original Sainsburys in York Buildings?
Angela Frances Gardner… John, Yes I remember it and the wonderful mirrors behind the counters. Did it have a marble floor?
Pauline Richards… yes! I found a ten shilling note in there on the floor and bought my mum and me a cream tea when it wasn’t claimed after 3 months. A long time for a young child to wait. And it’s too late to claim it now!!
Geoffrey Wilde… None of these memories are lost. Because they’re not just memories, they’re moments. They did not happen in the past. They are moments in the Now. Always accessible through the dimensional doors within.
Margaret Trowell… This and Kirby’s ironmongers in Norman Road and Bexhill Road by Filsham Rd traffic lights . Could nearly always find what you needed and reasonably priced too. Much missed
Julie Findlay-jones… Bought my chefs knives there, such a wonderful shop.
Chris Baker… “You could always get one in Mozleys!”
Roger Simmonds… I remember Sainsbury’s remember the walls were covered in white tiles I’m sure!
Wendy Weaver… Mozleys was an amazing place. I still miss having a natter with Bill downstairs among the nails and screws. He used to play snooker in the Con Club with George Digweed.
Michael Haywood… I remember the shops of the 70s/80s but cannot match them with current buildings. I remember, as well as Mozley’s, Ripleys [fruit and veg] and Golden Egg [restaurant]
Michael Sugrue… I worked there back in the day
Ken Hatch… Loved Mozleys….proper hardware shop
Lintonian Club Winchelsea – Mike O’Malley, Peters & Lee and Gerry Monroe – August 1973
Jim Breeds… Pity about the ‘ in “Peter’s”! Also why was Sally portrayed as a hooker? Never heard of the club.
Paul Huggett… Prior to being the Lintonian, it was the 58 Club – a notable, not to say notorious, place for a right old booze-up and live music often the Trowell brothers’ King,Rod and Co, with after hours drinking if you bought a “meal”, i.e. an interestingly flavoured meat pie…. Some fun nights were had – from what I can remember…….
Pete Millington… We (SPYKE – Ian Williams, Ginger Millington and Terry Chedzoy) played there (Lintonian Club) very regularly between 1973 and 1975. Great crowd and so many laughs to look back on.
Suzanne Evans… Good grief, came across this site. My parents Percy and Pat managed The Lintonian for a while. It was owned by my brother in law David Hendry and his business partner. I was only 15 years old and working behind the bar, little did anyone know then…
Terry Hopper… We often went to to the 58 club after the Odd Fellows in Ore village closed on a Saturday night in the late 60’s remember the sweat running down the black plastic covered walls and the late licence dodgy pies GREAT TIMES
Paul Huggett… When I lived in Rye I went to the 58 club quite a few times. For a long time King, Rod & Co were more or less the “house band” , there probably every other week – Kingsley and Rod Trowell, Kirk Ronchetti on drums, and Greg, the best high harmony guy around. Later I played there often in Lintonian days with the Amethyst band.
Peter Millington… SPYKE (Ian Williams, Terry Chedzoy and Me) played at the Lintonian Club very regularly in 1973/4. Great audiences.
Paul Huggett… First place I saw you play I think Peter, or could have been the club at Rye Harbour caravan park, before that.
