Army Surplus shop in George Street Hastings

Neil Duncan asks…

I remember an Army Surplus shop in George Street Hastings that sold vintage radio equipment and other military equipment. Not Malcom Mitchel as they were mainly for clothing. Do you have a name/photo please. Keep up the good work please love your pages.

Matt Thomas… Baldocks??

Alan Esdaile… I was thinking Baldocks originally but then I’m sure there was another shop selling military radios etc which could have also owned by Malcolm?

Eric Harmer… It was Malcombe Mitchells. Huge stacks of word war two clothes up the high st

Jim Breeds… What Chris said, I bought an old valve radio there in the 1980s. Now an estate agent.

Pete Brazier…Malcom Mitchells was the only actual army surplus stor that I know of in Hastings ever but there was two other places you could get millitary merchandise, one was the Trading Post just up from Iceland, but not in George street! And the other was White House Antiques on the opposite end of George Street across from the Arcade and nightclub it used to be right on the start of the road with a large gap between it and what is a secondhand book shop a new building was built on the site in the early 90’s. Found a pic but it was long after white house antiques closed!

Mike Waghorne… Malcolm’s boutique we called it in the late 60’s !

Tim Moose Bruce… Some good shops back then. Malcom Mitchell’s. Baldocks. Shop at end of George Street that sold valve radio gear. Shop in High Street that did all sorts of cameras, model railway stuff and bits among all the old porn magazines.. A good stall in George Street market that did electronic kits. And the Trading Post in Castle Street which had 2 shops, the 2nd being the electronic section. Built my first Hifi system from kits from there. Little 12 watt per channel amplifier and a pair of Grundig speakers. Built the amp case in school metalwork lesson and the speaker cabinets in woodwork lesson. Sounded great.

John Williams… I got my parka in the 60s rode my scooter all the way down from Peckham up the mods

Neil Duncan… I remember now. It was “The Trading Post” owned by Terry Ransom. I can picture him and can recall buying many items from this very helpful guy.

Andy Davies… Malcolm Mitchell’s, Great Coats, army boots, army jumpers, canvas bags. Grumpy owner, slightly intimidating. Just piles of stuff mostly on the floor. It was wonderful!
