Beverley Martyn – George Street Hall Hastings in 1992

Wee Jock… I used to live round the corner from her and Spenser they lived in Waterloo street and I lived on Brunswick terrace in Hove. Can I say that’s a special flier as I am a former sound tech at the black market VIP and that was the George street hall I love the history of that venue

Phil Little… I promoted that gig and played Congas on a couple of numbers. I’m hoping to do an interview with Beverley in the near future, talking about performing at Monterey Pop Festival and Dave Crosby recording 12 of her songs at his home, among other things.

Groucho Kangaroo… From time to time I search the internet for news on Beverley as I’m a big fan of her music – hence I stumbled onto your little post here. It would be so great to have some news on how she’s doing these days and if she’s palnning to release some new music or archival material. The release of her 1966/67 sessions on LP in 2018 has been a sensation – and I still hope that her gig at the Monterey Pop Festival has been recorded. As the people of the MPFestival-Foundation have started to release deluxe vinyl editions of some unreleased Monterey recordings it would be great if they would continue to do so until even Beverley’s little set would see the light of day. It would be amazing if the Crosby tape would still be in exsitence somewhere – I only know about two unreleased acetate demos by Beverley that should have ended up as bonus tracks on the CD-version of the 1966/67 sessions (but unfortunately Fly Records never released the CD).

Hastings miniature railway Marine Parade Old Town 1962

shared from Kat Annells https://www.facebook.com/groups/hastingshistory

Kat Annells… Hastings: miniature railway on Marine Parade, 1962

Peter Ellingworth… Remember it well…..this would have been the time a school friend and I used to help out cleaning the locomotives etc. in our free time, so this photo showing a very clean yellow coloured ‘Firefly’ with the shining dome is most likely some of our handiwork !
It also shows the late Jim Hughes -“JBH” -who ran and managed the railway on behalf if my memory is correct, Ian Allan the well known transport publications firm at that time. ‘Firefly’ was sold on to Kerrs Miniature Railway in Scotland which has since closed, although I understand the former founder owners grandson has plans to revive it. The other locos were the ‘Royal Scot’ and ‘Hampton Court’ my favourite, which ‘JBH’ rebuilt himself as a Great Western Railway ‘Saint’ class. Originally when first opened the line only ran from by the Lifeboat House to Rock-a-Nore, being extended to Marine Parade it’s present terminus in 1959-60.

Does anyone remember Sloopy’s disco just off Piccadilly Circus?? asks Jim Miller

Jim Miller… Does anyone remember Sloopy’s disco just off Piccadilly Circus??

A photo would be good to post on this page, if anyone has one?

Alan King… hang on…

Ross… The outside is shown 50 minutes into the 1970 film, Die Screaming Marianne.

Carol Cakir… I Used to go to Sloopys 73/4/5, before that went to a large disco upstairs via a big staircase maybe it was in the Lyceum premises further along the same side towards Leicester Sq called Bumpers there was a big neon sign of a lace up sports type of boot on the wall outside , sounds improbable I know but it was definitely there ! Also Tiffany’s, Sundowner , Samantha’s & Crackers , Studio Valbonne ( Monday night was showcase night in Valbonne different acts )Stopped for a couple of years then returned to Tiffany’s and Samantha’s 78/79 Noel was the DJ in the EType, Ozzie in the other dance floor room. Nice to read about everyone’s good memories!

Peter Waltman… this is a picture of a BRIGHTON club SLOOPYS from the early to mid 70’s NOT as stated a club in London, it is at the Town Center end of Dyke Road and about 50yds up from the Clock Tower & Churchill Square, I would have to wait outside the place when picking my Sister up from her Saturday night out there… it has changed names many times since the 70’s & closed down in about 2011, buildings still there but I don’t know what it is used as these days

Val Harrison… I worked as a part time waitress in Coventry St.Piccadilly Sloopys, not the Sloopys in the photo here. It was below ground dark and dingy but a great laugh and good dance scene. I met many celebs there. Down the road was Maximus Leicester Square. So many great discos back then, The Hippodrome in Leicester Square, Tramp,
The Candy Box, Roaring Twenties.

Eric West… Ross, I was at Sloopys every Friday for years, it then changed to Cerrys night club. It was small inside but had a massive atmosphere. At first only a few of us went there, but after it changed to Cerrys we use to fill the place, just our crew alone with a few other people. The music was first class dance tunes, Crown Heights Affair Far Out was the best dance track ever, I went into myself deeply when dancing to this tune. Best nights at this place. We even took Paul trouble Anderson with us. Late 70s was the best. Met Horace Carter there as well. Great dancer. Wondering if anyone can add to this.

Val Harrison… Thanks Eric, Sloopys Coventry Street. The door was manned by Robert Trotman and manager Kevin French. Another guy named “Goose” was like a care taker/cleaner. Sloopys was below ground, down the stairs, through a door on the right..Small dancing stage on the right side of the entrance and on the left was tables and chairs then up few stairs to the bars and alcove seating. On Coventry street’s main road there used to be an emporium selling, silver jewellery, records, kaftan etc called “kleptomania” with a K. Gosh! Although London is big anyone who worked in this area and Coventry garden pretty well knew each other. Great fun times.I met many celebs.

Mark Randall… I had this album! And I know Roger’s son Marty Siggery now has it!  I was always told by my brother who knew Terry and Roger, that the HM track ‘we got it nailed down’ was about contracting a ‘social disease’. Was this true?

Jenny Tyler… Steve Maxted (who was on on Thursday) was the best. Happy days (sigh). I was only 25 then.

Steppin’ Out – miniature railway photo 2

Martyn Baker… Tich Turner sent this photo of our band from 1976 to me a couple of days ago. In his own words….. “It was poster size and had been rolled up all these years. The Steppin’ Out logo had been stuck over Miniature Railway, but it had come away, and was the devil’s own job to stick back. It would have been easier to change our name to Miniature Railway! Then I had trouble getting it flat again, so I dismantled an old picture frame & print and put it inside. It’s the best we could do I’m afraid. It looks a bit battered and worn, but then hey, ain’t we all?” The band (original lineup) was: Tich Turner – Vocal, Martin Stringer- Vocal, Martyn Baker – Bass guitar, Wesley Magoogan – Saxes, Andy Knight – Drums, Roger Hubbard – Guitars & vocal, Piers Clark – Guitar

Ken Copsey… I remember watching you through the side window of the Cutter probably in 76. A real live band! I would have been 14.

Martyn Baker… Hi Ken. Hastings was pretty special in those days wasn’t it? So many of us did well eventually in the arts etc from that era…. All the best mate.

Mike Waghorne… That photo of Tich was how I remember him from college around 68/71

Dave Nattress… 44 years ago – that is frightening stuff!!

Marty Reardon… I didn’t see the band but met Tich, a couple of times. I was from Australia and working at the Pumphouse Pub in 73. Great times in Hastings.

Andy Qunta… Great photo!

Pete Prescott… Great band !

Tony Qunta… Great pic!

Jacquie Hinves…They were without doubt the best band that ever came out of Hastings. Wesley Magoogan, Mike Tanner , Kevin Hoad and ??? Who was the lovely guy from the top of Tower Road and his American girlfriend who joined the group?? Those were the greatest days.

Wesley Magoogan… That was Will Thomson

Sarah Harvey… This Day (March 30th) in 1968 on Hastings Pier. Episode Six

Mick O’Dowd… The fledgling Purple!

Andre Martin… Great band to work with, as I did later in 1968, when I took over from Mike Quinn in The Happy Ballroom under John Schofield and Strand Entertainments. Don’t think that Mike Quinn showed up on that gig?

Karen Sweatman… I was minus 2. Would love to have seen that!
