Peter Ellingworth… Taken in the early sixties, no later than 1965 I would say. The polish on the locos is probably the work of Derek Walsgrove and myself, who used to help out in our free time 1962-64. Top ‘staged’ photo shows Jim Hughes (“JBH”) who managed the railway or was part-owner on behalf of Ian Allan Ltd, showing the niceties of the workings of ‘Royal.Scot’ which was built by the well known model engineers Bassett- Lowke in 1938, to an interested family. I believe the ‘Scot’ was sold on to The Royal Victoria Railway in Hampshire, the current HMR owners have taken delivery of another new model a couple of years or so ago. Bottom photo- again going back in memory but I think the guy on ‘Firefly’, the yellow coloured loco is Barry Metcalfe, who used to drive on the HMR in his free time. I’m not sure of the whereabouts of Firefly at present, but it was sold on the the now closed Kerrs Miniature Railway in Arbroath, Scotland. There are, or were, plans to reopen it again. ‘Firefly’ visited the HMR again to take part in its 65th anniversary of opening of the line in 2013.
Peter Ellingworth…Following on: remember all the London Transport red RT buses- probably from Catford or Lewisham garages- that used to bring Sarf Lunduners down for the day parking up at Rock-or-Nore and The Stade?
David Martin… Jimmy Hughes train driver, in the first photo.
