Tony Bridger second from right.

Peter James Shaw…. Rev Stockdale first left!, Mr Drew Clifton next…!

Robert Searle….Paul Freeman drums,on the right. Fab picture.

Chris Baker….Wow! Tony Bridger!

Gaynor Duke… Dear old Rev Stockdale in that photo

Jane Hartley… Rev was in Index much later wasn’t he?

Andy Webster… Rev Stockdale far left and Paul Freeman far right. Who’s the guy in the middle?

Alan Esdaile… Still don’t know who the guy in the middle is? Is it possible the band were only a 4 piece and he was the manager or promoter?

Peter Horton… The guy in the middle is called Barry Jenkins as far as I can remember. He was the drummer when I joined them for a while in May/June 1968. The base guitarist was Clive somebody and at the time he was a hairdresser in a Hollington hairdressers just by the Blackman Avenue traffic lights. He used to cut and style the hair of the members of the band. I was recruited to replace Tony Bridger who was going off to the US. In the end he decided to stay and so I left after only 4 weeks.

Lynn Graham… Memories!

Peter Millington… That’s Clive Drew-Clifton

Colin Fox… Revvi on the left?

Alan Mitchell… The one in the middle is John Woolven he was the singer for the Springbeats before this group renamed themselves Morning Dew. The Springbeats line up Was John Woolven, Clive Drew-Clifton, Tony Bridger, and Barry Jenkins. The bass player was Tim Duke I believe.

Robert Searle… Freeman on the right

Nicola Dobson… Oh I have been asking about Barry Jenkins for some time and now I see him mentioned…which one is he as it was a long time ago?  I think Barry is second on the left..used to know him in 1968-9

Alan Mitchell… Nicola Dobson, I’m afraid Barry isn’t in this picture.

Gerry Forsch… This brings back some great memories, I never felt that there was any competition between this band and my band but good friendship. I was lucky enough to play with Tony and Tim years later in different bands.

Harry Randall… Remember Jonny and Tony (Vic) very well RIP Tony such a sad loss a brilliant guitarist and his black and white drawings were as good as a photo! i played with Tony for about 8 years a great mate!

Chris Jolly… What a GREAT NAME!

Andy Knight… I loved that band, so cool, or maybe hip then

Spam – 80 years old – who remembers having it?

Dennis Torrance… Had spam growing up quite liked it think it was the yanks during the war that brought it over here

Tim Moose Bruce… I thought it was those bloody vikings…

Martin Curcher… Heart Attack in a Tin !

Anne Gower… Happy birthday spam

Andre Martin… Saved this country during WW2 could be used for all roles not just food, used in trench walls, bomb shelters etc – Hah Hah. But its more modern produce in the 90s was great in ration packs. And many that were brought up on spam fritters are still here today and in reasonable health !!

Peter Fairless… Spam fritters were on the menu well into the ’70s. I may buy a tin, later, just to reminisce…

Andre Martin… I used to love spam and tomato sandwiches for lunch. And of course the ultimate would be span fritters, baked beans, chips and fried egg for tea.

Mark Gilham… Spam song Monty Python still funny.

Dave Nattress… I used to have SPAM as a kid. We knew how to live. I had heard long ago that SPAM was an acronym for something so I’ve looked it up. Apparently SPAM is an acronym for Special Processed American Meat.

Judie Struys… My worst nightmare. Especially spam fritters 😰

Jim Breeds… Wot we bought in New York a few years ago. BBE Jan 2008, but we were never going to open it.

Hastings Pier News

HASTINGS PIER NEWS. From the shareholders meeting today, the pier capacity for events has now gone up to 4000. What with the main Brighton venue being refurbished shortly, this will leave Hastings with the largest venue in the South and hopefully attract big names. With the pier now taking back the catering, The Pavilion building is now being refurbished and a lovely gesture is that it will feature a monkey light on the wall, in dedicated to Monkey Dave who I’m sure many people here remember with great fondness.

Andre Martin…  Interesting meeting and some good ideas/plans presented. plus a special proposal for dogs – will let the Pier Media Circus explain more on that ! Interesting with the 4000 potential capacity, does this now mean that we can expect 4000+ their dogs ! Excellent news about the catering and the local sourcing, both big plus. Steve Peak mentioned this is book was still available in the Gift shop if you have not yet bought a copy – now is the time!( cue “The Real Thing”)

Jim Breeds… I need you and Steve to sign a copy of the book that I can buy Andre.

Andre Martin… That can be arranged – no problems

Mick O’Dowd… Good news indeed let’s just hope they review the prices in the cafe!

Colin Gibson… Great to see a Monkey Dave tribute

Daily Mail says… The 75-year-old legend, who has sold over 500million albums, was spotted cutting a solo figure as he boarded a train at Kings Cross to Hastings and made himself comfortable in a seat in first class.
Richard J Porter… Then the train to Rye where he would get a taxi home or someone would pick him up. Normal.

Andy Gunton… He does it all the time & has done so for many years. I can remember driving him & Linda from Rye to Ashford on several occasions. Not so sure about this train that goes from Kings Cross to Hastings though, have they built a new line while I wasn’t looking?

Richard J Porter… Kings Cross to St.Pancreas, High Speed to Ashford then Marshlink to Hastings. But he could get off in Rye saving himself a bit!! They probably said that to throw the public off the scent, LOL.

Rex Thinderbolt… Ticket to ride?

Martin Waghorne… Nobby !!

Debs Anderson… Is that really news Daily Mail?!

Sarah Harvey… Nobody tells me anything….never knew we ran trains from Kings Cross to Hastings and he appears to be on a 375… must check with train planning.

Graham Belchamber… I met him on the train last year, he got on at Robertsbridge. Great Chap and had a brief conversation with him when we got off the train at Charing Cross. Very friendly and happy to natter.

Wendy Weaver… When the children were young he and Linda could regularly be seen shopping in Queens Road in Hastings. (before the shopping centre was built)

Angela Frances Gardner… OMG he’s on a train!

Phil Gill… Yes, but he’s paid for the entire carriage.

Terry Huggins… I’m curious to know how many trains run from King’s Cross to Hastings. Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Victoria, yes, but King’s Cross is a new one.

David Roderick… The 1st day of filming for A Hard Days Night 2!

Sharon Sellens… He must have chartered that train from King’s Cross to Hastings 😉

Ralph Town… Saw them at Old Town Carnival once

Angela Jordan…  Used to have his hair cut in silver hill the barbers which was on the corner of Duke Road

Flanko Fin Barr… yeah your right he did

Roland Clarke… I wouldn’t meet him though, looks like he’s in first class!

SMART SOUNDS by Colin Bell reviewing Milk Of The Tree: An Anthology Of Female Vocal Folk & Singer-Songwriters 1966-1973 Various Artists CD Set

MILK OF THE TREE: AN ANTHOLOGY OF FEMALE VOCAL AND SINGER-SONGWRITERS 1966-73

4 hours and 60 tracks on this brilliant new compilation of one of the greatest era’s of music of the 20th century. As much a social shift as well as a musical one, prior to the mid-sixties you just didn’t hear that much solo female output, especially on the radio, in retrospect it was a largely male dominated pop world.

However with womens liberation gaining (quite rightly) swift progress in 1966 new voices started to make themselves heard. From Greenwich Village coffee houses to laid back canyons in L.A. came artists who would become household names led by Joan Baez, Jackie DeShannon, Melanie, Laura Nyro, Linda Ronstadt and Janis Ian, all included here and to name just a few. Of course it wasn’t just the USA producing new artists our homegrown talent, again included here and again to name just a few included the likes of Beverley Martin, Marianne Faithfull, Sandy Denny, Bridget St. John and Mary Hopkin. This release concentrates on rarer tracks and not the over compiled that is usual. Its hard to pick one highlight from another but personally i’d mention Laura Nyro ‘Upstairs By A Chinese Lamp’ Jackie DeShannon ‘Come And Stay With Me’ (a hit for the aforementioned Marianne Faithfull) Sandy Denny ‘ Late November’ and Buffy Sainte Marie ‘ The Dream Tree’. Buffy ive learnt over the years is a ‘marmite’ artist people either love or loathe her voice, I have everything she’s ever recorded and her lyrics never fail to move me, so I guess you can gather what camp I’m in! Along with all the solo offerings we are also treated to bands such as Stone Poneys, Mellow Candle, Pentangle, Spirogyra, Ithaca and Trees, wonderful. Also some tracks appear for the first time like the female American duo based in London with the wonderful monicker of Emily Muff! This compilation has something for everyone, it may introduce the young to music they weren’t around to hear at the time and equally for those of us that were it’ll get the synapses firing and bring back some memories of a golden era. When did you last here Principal Edwards Magic Theatre?! 3 CD’s a 44 page booklet full of info and great sound. Grapefruit Records show again how good they are at compiling interesting music collections to whet our musical tastebuds. Lets hear it for the girls.   For more information go to https://www.cherryred.co.uk

Til next time……..Colin

Andy Qunta… Great review, Colin! Thanks!

Now over 1000 members on the SMART Facebook page.

A big thank you to Nick Prince for bringing this to our attention and posting these images on the Facebook page.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/smart70s/

Alan Esdaile… WOW! Thanks Nick and thank everyone for their support. A number of people help to keep this page interesting and couldn’t do it without them. Don’t forget still need more old group photos and music related cuttings, especially ones from the Hastings area.

Ernest Ballard… Nice one x

Nick Prince… It’s one great page you have created Alan and I couldn’t think of anyone more qualified to successfully start and run such a page than your goodself.. For me the music, local groups, retro talk, film and cinema stuff, pier bits and general chit chat of 60’s, 70’s and 80’s nostalgia successfully goes hand in hand to make it such a great page. Something for everyone that was in the area during those decades and of course further afield… Posts from SMART are regularly shared to three of my pages and that is how broad an appeal it has….

Mick O’Dowd… Well done Alan!

Jon McCallion… Well done Alan.

Paul Dove… Well Done Alan, you keep it real , will be there fri , 👊 🎹 🎤🎸

Dave Nattress… For so long I was trying to discover the names of the very many bands that played the pier – so many of which I saw, as well as getting back to all the other local gigs and venues. Also I was wanting to re-visit old band-mates, local names, the musical competition back in the day, and just to re-live so many local connections, music shops, clothes shops, DJ’s, pubs, clubs, characters, and this site has enabled all of that. It’s compulsive stuff. Really ticked all the boxes and brought the great memories back. Probably best though, the pier on a wet, dark, cold winter’s night, the floor of the bar, ankle deep in Whitbread Tankard bitter, the cold and draughty and actually quite grim old ballroom – great days.

The Sons Of Man, The Lonely Ones, Cathy McGowan Show featuring the Equals. Witch Doctor. 1965

Andre Palfrey-martin collection

Andre Martin… the Equals with Eddie Grant, appeared on the Cathy McGowan Show one Sunday at the Witch Doctor. For some unknown reason, I thought this had been in the afternoon, but the advert tells otherwise. Although the Equals are not billed, they appeared as Guests.

Barry M Dyke….  remember not seeing Eddie Grant and the Equals twice. Apparently Mr. Grant was too idle to travel to Hastings. Pre booked ticket money was, eventually, refunded.

Mick Knights… I danced my socks of at the Cathy McGowan show, but failed to get a ticket for Ready Steady Go. Not bitter or anything!!!!

Yvonne Cleland… I saw Eddy Grant on the pier and it was brilliant!

Mick O’Dowd… Eddie owned a flay in Devonshire Place in the late 70’s as I was introduced to him by a guy who was his plugger/confidente when I worked at Bonitas. Remember the Sunday Club gig.

Alan Esdaile…  I saw The Equals on Hastings Pier, I think once was an allnighter and the other time was The Sunday Club and they were excellent.

Lynn Graham… Those were the days. The Witch Doctor was my second home:) not that my mum knew of course! Hehe.

Trevor Spears… The Lonely ones excellent band!
