Aardvark – 1970

supplied by Philip John Mott Road Crew Live

Philip John… As you probably know if you’ve ever been to one of our shows , Rich & I worked freelance for numerous bands before and after Mott the Hoople. One of the outfits we spent quite sometime with back in 1970 was Aardvark a prog rock band featuring Dave Skillin vocals, Stan Aldous bass, Frank Clark drums and Steve Milliner organ. If you check out the back cover there’s a tiny pic of us looking very Hairy ! We had some fun times with them and there’s a lot of stories to tell so here’s one of them.:- I got on pretty well with Dave the singer and he would often get me up to play tambourine (badly, if that’s at all possible) Well the band wanted to get the audience more involved and I came up with this great idea, or so I thought. After each gig I’d collect up all the empty drink cans lying around then take them home wash them out and seal them up with a handfull of dried peas inside them. I’d then paste labels on them with the immortal words ‘Shake Like Fuck’ scrawled on them.
At the next gig when it came time for me to join Dave on stage with my tambourine I came on dragging a sack of the SLK tins. i chucked 10 or more out to the front of the audience and they dutifully followed the directions on the labels of these make shift maraccas. Now filled with confidence I hurled the rest of the sack into the crowd . Within seconds a can came whizzing past my ear followed by a whole fusillade of them. Soon we were ducking and diving and throwing them back. The audience loved it but the music suffered and after a number of similar outings we dropped the idea. Mind you if you’re in a band and you need cheap maraccas…………..

Anthony Collins… Met one of the band members about 25yrs ago at my brothers (Mike collins) flat, and gave him my copy of their album(as he didn’t have one). I was given mine as one of college entertainments judges at the Lyceum ballroom London when they won a band contest. There were 13 students from all round uk colleges and two personality judges, Sandie Shaw and David Bowie. A great night with a great band.

Dave Greenfield – The Stranglers keyboard player dies

Simon Page… Such a shame. I was only talking about Dave with a friend a few days ago and he told me a nice story about Dave. My friend was at a Stranglers gig and used to try to tape the gigs (only for himself, not for bootlegging!) He said that Dave put the cassette recorder right by his keyboard and recorded the gig for my friend.

Edge St Leonards… Sad, down on the beach’s dude RIP another over the edge, but no forgotten RIPX. Yes brothers and sisters stay strong well get there on the other side x

Michael Wilson… Such sad news. The Stranglers music has been with me since I was 14 back in 1977. I first saw them at the Top Rank Brighton back in 1980.

Malcolm Sharp… Golden brown. One of the great songs, r i p

Ralph Town… Still love Feline.Really great album.

I was manager  of Delroy Williams at Mecca Agency and organised  ‘The Soul Fever 78 tour’ with Mr Superbad ‘Freddie Mack’ and ‘The Satin Bells’. Delroy’s still going strong and performs more reggae nowadays, as well as various movie and tv work . Including a spot in the ‘Batman’ film.  Really nice guy.

Pete Fisher… Amazing Alan. Although I spent eight years in the world of pro reggae I never came across his name, but have found out he’s a highly respected and accomplished artist. Amazing that you managed him, but strange that he was marketed here in the soul category, when he’s actually a reggae artist. His biography is really interesting, and apparently he organised the first annual open air reggae festival in 1966 in Brockwell Park, which went on until 1971. I also found out he acted in The Saint in an episode that seems to include a recording studio – I’d love to watch it but I guess I’ll have to buy the DVD as it’s not on youtube! Photos here…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_2qdSesxV8

Mick O’Dowd… Saw him on The Pier show. Really impressed as I was, and am, a soul man.

Fairlight Studios 1978 to 1982 have we got your tapes?

Andy Knight says…. Paul Dengate and I ran Fairlight Studios from 1978 to 1982. I have a number tapes (reel to reel) recorded by people I am no longer in contact with. Any chance anyone may the whereabouts or know who might. They are Ann Maxine, Harry and the Dicemen, Ivory Rose, Gen Kiddies, Trilobites (Jonathan Jukes), John LeBreton, Hestinga, First Bite (Derek Macey), Chris and Bryson. Best, Andy Knight.

Mike Mitchell… Brett Taylor  might know how to get in contact with Nick Barnard, drummer with The Dicemen. And Dave Baker and Wally of The Trilobites are still around Hastings and Bexhill… Chris Boorman who drummed for them is somewhere up north these days and Frances Jukes knows Jona’s whereabouts.

Tim Moose Bruce…. May be able to find Derek Macey. Mate of mine was in a band with him in the 80s.

Andy Qunta…. Unfortunately I don’t know any of those people. As a side-note though, I remember going in there late ’81 or early ’82 and recording a demo of a song called Statistics, which was subsequently recorded by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band for a single, and the opening track on their album “Somewhere In Africa”. Of course, I have great memories of Fairlight Studios! Thanks, Andy!

David Kent… If I remember rightly, John Stiles at Stiles Garage in Battle was the bassist with The Gen Kiddies.

Tim Moose Bruce… He is now a music lecturer at sussex down college in Eastbourne.

Reg Duff… I remember coming to the studio with First Bite (my first ever stint on electric guitar after Plum Duff) be interesting, although probably painful to hear it now!

Chris Sambrook… The Gen Kiddies were a great band. They were from Battle and Hastings. . Kevin O’Connor was Vocals haven’t seen Kevin for years. John Stiles and Dave Craven and the late Chris Turner on Bass. They were all a good laugh when playing gigs and never took themselves too seriously. Favourite song ‘Who you looking at, why are you looking at me like that”

Jon Wilde… Great bunch of guys. Missing Chris Turner. Any photos anyone?

Richard Turner… B nice to c any pictures of the hen kiddies

Nick Barnard… Hi Andy and Paul. Sorry for the delay in responding. My sister who has recently returned from New Zealand made me aware of your post back in August. I was drummer with The Dicemen along with Harry Rogers (lead singer / guitarist) and Richard Burley (bass guitar). I would be interested in any tapes you have  Get in touch when you get a chance. Cheers.

I will pass on your email address Nick.

Chapel Gate Green… In reply to Chris Sambrook, Chris Turner’s voice was so powerful – ” Ooo yoo lookin’ et ”
Remember it well along with ‘Radio Control’ & ‘Just another day’. I was the synth player (Blair). Haven’t seen the guys in the years since we split 🙁 I remember recording with you. ‘Radio Control’ was our musical answer to the CB fad that was big back then.

Chapel Gate Green… Hi Andy / Paul, Just found this post after all these years. I have a poor, very well played demo cassette of Gen Kiddies that we made with you. I think it was Radio Control, Who You looking At … plus ??? Tape is in deep storage somewhere in the barn. Would love to hear from you re the masters. Haven’t seen or heard from the band since splitting. Are the guys still around? Never took a single photo of practice sessions (at Mountfield Gypsum) nor at our gigs and have never seen any taken by others. Would love to see some if they’re out there. I remember well going to audition with them … played a bit at the practice session, they went off for a private talk then returned and said “f***ing hell, we’ve got a synth player”. Well chuffed all round. I really loved that band. Miss you guyz. Blair

Andy Knight… I need to look in my archives, will let you know
