SMART Coffee meet 42 report

Our 42nd meet and a number of people left early for a separate meeting on Hastings Pier but were quickly replaced by late comers. Among the newbies this time were John Baker and Sid Saunders. John was chatting about the times he worked at The Aquarius and Astral Club. Sid was remembering pirate radio days, when a disc jockey used to appear in the Pier cafe and they used to give him request on a piece of paper to take back to the ship. Lee Merry had photos of gig posters of bands he promoted at The Carlisle and other places in the 1980’s. Among the bands were English Rogues, Truncheon Meat Squad, Vicious Minds, Becki and The Bombshells, Big Spanner and Lost In Space. Len Benton arrived with a Record Songbook featuring Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas on the cover, also some more photos of The Seekers, Pardon and Deep Purple. Roger Carey had with him a flyer from early 2000 of bands that played at the Pilot Field club. Also leaflets of Alexander’s in Chester when Liane was on the bill. Among the other interested names to appear was Jan Akkerman.  He also had a recent leaflet for Sprit Of 66 Festival Belgium which featured some great acts.  Mick O’Dowd was talking about Wynder K Frog album and Johnny Walker and Radio London. Sarah Harvey was looking forward to Hastings Rock radio ,back on the airways on 5th May. Pete Prescott had with him the first glance of Beatles Day 19 programme, as well as bags full of lp’s and singles. Including The Telham Tinkers Hot In Alice Springs, Andrew Caine What Kind Of World 12” single and a interesting compilation The Tony Macaulay and John MacLeod Song Book Album. Lots of chat and thoughts about the future of The White Rock Theatre and gardens, Graham Nash coming to the De La Warr and Scalliwags reunion on 31st March at The Masonic Hall. This is just a small bit of what I remember, anyone who wishes to add anything interesting you were talking about, then please feel free to do so.

Andy Qunta… Sounds like a fun time, as always!

featuring Will Powell (on drums hidden), Neil Cartwright (guitar), Barry French (guitar) and Paul Huggett (vocals).

Barry French… Hi Neil. Never seen these shots before. Any idea of the venue?

Sheila Maile… I was a good friend of Will Powell he was in a band called Festivity Blues with my boyfriend in1969/71, do you know his whereabouts?

Barry French… Will is still living in Hastings (Not sure where) My wife saw him out recently, & apart from recovering from a broken leg, he was fine & in good spirits.

Sheila Maile… Thank you for reply

Who remembers these coins?

Jan Warren… Yes, of course …….. proper money!! and I’ve still got at least one of each of those coins!

Angela Frances Gardner…  I’ve got a few as well! Felt really rich if I had a half crown!

Leigh Wieland-Boys… Ten Bob notes were my favourite, It went a long way back in the 60s!!- my wealthy Grandpa always gave my brother & I one each every time we saw him! My first job was in ‘old money’

Jim Breeds… Actually, a 10 bob note wasn’t particularly nutritiona

Colin Fox… I don’t know if any of you saw the article in the paper yesterday, but if you have one of the first decimal 2 pence pieces, and it has ‘New Pence’ rather than ‘Two Pence’ on it, then depending what condition it is in, it could be worth between £4,000 and £16,000.

Roger Simmonds… Me!

Alan Esdaile… I liked three pence pieces

Eugene Hughes… Me too Alan. Cant beat a nice pair of thrupenny bits.

Flanko Fin Barr… I still got some

Sid Saunders… And who can remember the White five pound note? White fivers were taken out of circulation in 1957. They were so big that you had to fold them to put a Wallet or purse.

Eric Peckham… Half a crown – shedload of money when I was small.

Dennis Torrance… Remember all the coins but the farthing was out of circulation in my youth . Half a crown was my pocket money

Martin Richter… The farthing are (just) before my time – but my granddad did the pools and the coin was on the front of the pools companies yearbook.

Leigh Wieland-Boys… I was 4 when they ceased to be legal tender but my old Nan used them when we played cards to make it more interesting – brings back memories

Josie Lawson… I do…dad used to save farthings in a red box.left in car one night, was ruined as a young boy placed something under his garage door, you can imagine the rest. A write off. He also said, as a child he accidentally swallowed a 3d piece and his mum had to thump his back for it to come out..I remember all of them…

Charlie Ball… Ten bob

Phyllis Mendenhall… Still have some ,that was real money

Ernest Ballard… Not much worth a farthing in today’s shopping list

Pete Prescott… Me. I’m OLD !

Glenn Piper… Thrupenny bits

Andre Martin… Somebody has made a suggestion that once we have kicked the EU/Common Market? or whatever the current name of this multi layers and expensive beaucratic organisation is called today, we should adopt the onl £ s & p for currency, as well as the old imperial measurements. Not sure about this might not be a good idea if we want to trade with the colonies.

Rob Soundman… Missing from collection two shilling and farthing coins! Still got them all

supplied by Paul Dengate

Paul Dengate… I have this picture to hand, taken after the time I ran the Box. It’s a Catsfield Steamers rehearsal: Kevin Hoad on drums, John Burgess (later vocalist with Better Days), Brian Chainey just visible behind John, Jane Downes and myself (playing the Gibson SG mentioned in a post on this page a few days ago). Umpteen other Steamers would also have been there.

Yvonne Cleland… I used to work with JB. He’s now the rector at Fairlight church. Catsfield Steamers were a cracking band.

Paul Dengate… The Steamers are still playing, though not so often since Will, Jane, Jo and myself left at the start of this year

Tim Moose Bruce… I like the Plastix on the graffiti o the wall. Remember them as a Bexhill punk band.

Andy Caine… Hi Paul, is that the SG I bought from you?

Paul Dengate… Yes
