Andy Knight… My recollection is this is Banned, a short lived band in about 1970, Digger Rosewell (voc) Bob Shipway (bass), Chris Baker (gtr) and Andy Knight (drms), Bob and Chris are welcome to correct or add re the date etc. It was in Christ Church School (upstairs), we borrowed a scout handcart to get the equipment from where I lived in Carisbrooke Road to the entrance in Alfred Street, we must have been bonkers

Bob Shipway… Wow, I’d forgotten this line up and band name completely!

Mike Mitchell… Not bonkers, Andy, just young!

Chris Baker… Wow! Me too! Need more info on this. I was clearly there, but then “if you can remember those days you weren’t really there!”.  Reminds me of the early days before we even had a van! Carrying all the amps and speakers from Priory Road to the Round Table Youth Club for every practice. Hands were numb from carrying the weight so it took a while to recover before we could play anything!

Sam Rosewell… Wow! My dad (Digger) looks so cool!!

Lyn Humphrey… I worked with Digger Rosewall in ’73, at Ashdown House (Works Bills).

Chris Baker… Aaaagh! So very long ago!  Town Council at Camber Sands. We played there twice a week for a couple of summers. Must be late 60s I think. Great days.
Left to right: Steve Hersee, Brian *Bear” Williams, Bob Shipway, Pete Robertson and Chris Baker.

Chris Baker…. A more respectable studio shot of The Town Council. Taken by G.Ivan Barnett and a very blurry one in the basement practice room at the Round Table Youth Club. Amazing!

Here’s Chris at his 18th birthday with the group Town Council. Harry the manager and Bob Shipway in the photo.

Chris Baker… I am not sure I’d quite developed the Rock God image at that point in my career!

Phil Gill… But the Hofner was too cool for school – do you still have it?

Chris Baker… I do indeed Phil. I had a Humbucker fitted and split to two leads for “stereo” many years ago. It can make more different tones than most! I also have a Strat which I love to bits

Mick O’Dowd… Went to school with “Bill” Wilshire and we used to get together at his place in OLd London Road that he called “Fat’s Pad”. We tried to form a band with me on vocals(ouch) , Trev Partridge on bass, Neil (can’t remember surname) on drums, “Bill” was going to be on keyboards when he could manage to buy one, Tim Purcell on guitar and I think Pete Shaw might have got involved near the end. Working name was The Thoroughbreds. First and last time I tried to be in a band so decded to become a DJ instead!

Chris Baker… Bill’s name was Peter really and Willshire not WilTshire.

Conan Howard… played my first ever gig with Chris Baker somewhere in a basement, in George street Hastings BACK IN THE 70S Conan (Len)

Chris Baker… I remember mate! 7 George St. “Showstopper” was the shop we had. The basement got “damp” when it was high tide

Iain Cobby… Nice to see you Chris! and a young Bob and Harry. Thanks for many memories.

Chris Baker… And you too Iain! Looking back at those pics makes me think we were lucky to be playing the music we loved and getting paid for it too!

Sam Tripp with Allan Turner on vocals & Ollie on drums – 1970’s

supplied by Hastings Groups from 1958 to the present

Allan Turner, Jeff Hobson, Ollie, Bob Shipway.

Chris Sambrook….The same Allan Turner from Rediffusion from 1970/1971. Had a band called Artus in 1971. On bass John Davies and on keyboards Nigel Banks. Would be nice to see him again

Mick Mepham… You there, Turner, man up and be more forceful this instant!! Don’t you just love write-ups? At least it was positive …

Chris Baker… Didn’t know Bob Shipway was with them. Lost touch when he moved to Bexhill. Love to know where he is now.

Allan Osbourne… Can anyone help with any information regarding the members of Sam Tripp and where they might be now. I was the front man for the band back in the early seventies. Bob Shipway bass, Ollie drums, Jeff on telecaster and myself , then Allan Turner as lead singer. I would be gratefull for any info as to present whereabouts of the others . My E mail address is Bacarooda@hotmail.com  Thank you.

Allan Osbourne.. Thanks to people who were kind enough to respond concerning Sam Tripp and Arktuss. Bob Shipway is living in Scotland and married and Nigel Banks is living in New Zealand. If anyone knows the whereabouts of John Davis or Jeff Hobson , please contact me on Email Bacarooda@hotmail.com any information would be greatly appreciated. featuring Bob Shipway, Colin Pierce, Andy Knight, Jim Beadle and Dave Shaw. The graffiti photo was taken in Alfred Street, St Leonards. Is that Daisy on the wall?

1970’s advert Shaft & Valhalla Disco – Christ Church.

Robert Searle… I remember seeing Shaft play at The Regent St Leonards. Dave Shaw was with me in a band called Foxy with Colin Fox and Les Harding.

Yvonne Cleland… Yes looks like Daisy graffiti!

Bob Shipway… Happy (and great fun) days!!!

Nick Patching… I played with Dave in a band called Burnt Ice. RIP Dave.

Tarquin publicity photo

supplied by Bob Shipway

Bob Shipway… As it’s Tony’s birthday, what better time than to share our ‘walkerprints’ poster of the relatively short-lived band called Tarquin (after Tony’s horse what else!) The photo was taken early-ish on a Sunday morning with all of us the worse for wear from our gig the night before. After the photos were taken we adjourned to the pub where Andy and I met two young women one of which, in due course, became my first wife! Good days – good times!

Graham Burfield… I remember that picture from when I worked in his shop think it was on the wall somewhere

Mike Waghorne… Is that the Bob Shipway that I was at Hastings College with in the late 60’s/ early 70’s doing electrical engineering course ?

Bob Shipway… Hi  Mike, I suppose like a lot of us inwardly I feel no different from the time we were at college but outwardly I’ve been raced and rallied a tad too much! Life is good up in sunny Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Hope you’re keeping well.

Alan Esdaile… Tony Bird, Andy Knight, Tarquin, Paul Dove and Bob Shipway.

Pete Prescott… Great photo. I like Andy’s tash. Very Robert Redford !

Terry Pack… Tempted to ask ‘Why the long face?’ but I’ll resist the urge. I think I once ‘rode’ Tarquin as far as The United Friends one Sunday morning. I was terrified. My one and only time on horseback.

Shaft – Mk1

supplied by Bob Shipway

Bob Shipway… Shaft Mk1 (L-R) Pete Shaw, Andy Knight, Colin Pearce, and Bob Shipway. Not sure of the date or location.

Andy Knight… What were we doing, you look v happy on drums! Dave and I singing, mad or what, Jim hiding, looks like Hastings Pier to me or maybe Lees Cliff ?

Bob Shipway… yep very happy indeed. I thought it may be Hastings Pier. Yes, mad, and good, times. I can remember swapping onto drums so you could sing at the front on a couple of songs but can’t for the life of me remember what they were.

Alan Esdaile… Rare to see Andy out front. Does look like the pier.

Robert Searle… Remember seeing Dave and Shaft at the Regent

Andy Knight… Will look that date up, not sure about Pete Shaw, prob Dave?

Anyone remember the Hastings group The Devils?

supplied by Bob Shipway

Bob Shipway… I’ve a number of business cards from bands I was in from my time in Hastings. Some of them I have good recollections of who was in them with me and the brilliant times we had but some are less well defined in my memory… The Devils is one I have little recollection of. Does anyone recall the band, who was in it, when and if it gigged and when it was active? I can remember being in a number embryonic groups before I joined Town Council and think that The Devils must be one of them. I also remember practicing in a hall (church hall or youth club?) and seeing one of Tich Turner’s bands laying there on a gig night. Any recollections out there?

Alan Esdaile… Don’t remember “The Devils’ but remember Love Bucket.
