S.O.S. Skidmore, Osborne, Surman and Felix – The Carlisle Hastings 15th August 1975

Phil Thornton… I was at this one ! – they had a couple of VCS3’s which made me happy …. there was a LOT of honking stick action which was hard to understand …. can’t imagine this kind of band being allowed now !!!

Tony Qunta… Yes I remember that very ‘unusual’ gig! Spoke to Mr Osborne – very interesting character!

Terry Pack… I remember this one, too. Great stuff. I got the chance to play with Alan Skidmore a few years later. A wonderful player.

Tony Qunta… Terry, Wow! That must have been quite something!

Martyn Baker… I seem to remember going to this one aged 16. I thought Felix were better, but then what the hell did I know?

Felix press cutting … Wesley Magoogan, Roger Carey, Den Wootton, Will Thomson and Mike Tanner.

Wesley Magoogan… Amazing looking at the past ! Hard to believe this was 40 years ago, seems like yesterday !

Martin Curcher… Is that Mike Tanner on the right?

Liane Carroll… Fab picture. My hubby looks sooooo cute!!!

Yvonne Cleland… Remember this night well! xxx

Conan Howard… Samisen knocked it out of the ball park that night

Sarah Harvey… Yes we did

Bernard Goffredo… as always. It was fun in those days

Roger Carey… Lenny and Ralph!

Roger Carey…That gig went particularly well, the review was written by Stephen Turner who was in year above me at school and became a Hastings Observer journalist of renown- it was good to have someone who had interest and enthusiasm for the Hastings music scene! Thanks for putting this up Alan! Look forward to when we can all meet up at a “Smart” gathering again….The band Felix had been formed in late 1974 I think , Den Wootton’s brother Cliff was originally on bass but suggested I should take his place so I joined in 1975.. We carried on into 76 with a lot of writing, recording, rehearsals and selected gigs but when Wesley Magoogan decided to leave to concentrate on session work the band was reshaped by Mike Tanner and Will Thomson into “Aircraft”. Den and I moved to our pop/rock band “HatTrick”.. Fun and games man!.. One of my film quotes in that essay about Felix… In “JFK” Joe Pesci plays a very jumpy character who , while being interviewed by Kevin Costner, talks about “everybody was flipping sides- fun and games , man…!” It came to me whilst thinking of us all joining or checking out each other’s bands!

Barry French… Happy memories of two great local bands

Terry Pack… I heard Felix a couple of times. Roger’s playing scared the living daylights out of me.

Jo Turner… I was there both nights.

Sarah Harvey… I organised all of the Ore Festivals in the 1970s. I wonder if they would be as popular today??

Jo Turner… I loved it Sarah. Thank you for the memories you helped create

Nigel Ford… Stephen Turner’s report mentions STRIFE at the Pier which I attended and then bought the album “RUSH” with “Man of the wilderness” and great title track.
Haven’t heard you play them on your HR Show yet Sarah Harvey?….though I’ve yet to catch up with one from this year when we went to the Stables Theatre.

Sarah Harvey…..Some Pier adverts featuring local bands… Felix and Damaris from April and May 1976 respectively.

Phil Thornton…..Damaris, were a great band, they supported Stallion a few times.

Yvonne Cleland….Felix! Great band!

Andy Qunta….I  remember Felix – they were excellent!

Chris Meachen…..Seventh Heaven came from the Isle of Wight, they were kind of early jazz funk

Mick O’Dowd…..Keep ’em coming Sarah!

Kev Towner… “Juvenile Fashion Parade” – how things have changed!!

Chris Boorman… Pretty sure I was at the Glitter Band gig!

Claire Triance.. How things change best summer hot

Richard Lavender… Remember the news of the world fishing comp. Won several rods over the years in that.

Dave Lelliott… Packed out at the Glitter Band

Nick Webb… Nice to see the Poster with my friends band Damaris on

Robert Searle… We supported The Glitter Band at the Pier when we were Easy Street, can’t say it was this date though. By the way, they were brilliant.

Iain Cobby… Nice to hear from Nick Webb, was that the Damaris we used green house pellets as smoke bombs and sent the audience of french students back 10 feet coughing and choking? I’m sure that was the gig that I have a recording of………………….

Dave Nattress… Iain, we definitely tried some pyrotechnics a few times – quite possibly your idea old chap or maybe Paul’s. Nick I remember you very well – best regards after 40 years!

Nick Webb… Cheers guys those where the days or night lol

Roger Carey (bass), Wesley Magoogan (Sax)

Wesley Magoogan… Blimey ! With a young Roger Carey !

Sarah Harvey… Great photo. I remember watching Felix rehearsing at St.Helens Church Hall and also remember organising the annual Ore Festivals….happy times. 🙂

Yvonne Cleland… Those were the days! Has Rog got any of the rest of the band?

Alan Esdaile… Sorry Yvonne , no other Felix ones at the moment but hopefully he will find some more. I do have some very good Pueblo ones to post soon.

Sarah Harvey… Samisen used to rehearse there as did a few other bands. Harry Williams was a big part of the Ore-Zodiac Community Association and I think the Town Council may have rehearsed at The Zodiac Centre (Formerly Round Table) in Priory Road.

Kev Towner… Reading all this stuff, I come away with the impression that everybody was in about five bands – at the same time!! LOL

Phil Gill… Still are Kev.

Conan Howard… found I have some photos of FELIX at the Carlisle when Samisen played at the same gig. will see if I can post them , if I cant do it I shall pass them over to SARAH to do it ….all the best CONAN

Dave Weeks… Bring back the Ore Centre rock festival.

Sarah Harvey… Funnily enough I thought of reviving it for old times sake but got enough to do right now with Hastings Rock

Yvonne Cleland… I was at that gig. I seem to remember that Will volunteered me to announce Felix!

Ernest Ballard… Great picture

Jo Turner… Me and Liz Turner. I remember this so well.

Tony Qunta… Great pic! Brings back wonderful memories

Colin Gibson… Is that a Burns bass Rog is playing? That was my first bass! It had a mini jack, so if your lead went, you were fucked!

Felix write up & Samisen photos – 29th July 1975

cutting and photos supplied by Sarah Harvey

Sarah Harvey…..Article about Felix and a preview of their forthcoming gig at The Carlisle, which I remember very well. I was talking to Conan Howard about this very gig at Friday’s SMART meeting and how he had a very lucky escape afterwards.

Sarah Harvey…..The Carlisle in 1975 when supporting Felix – Conan (Len) Howard (Bass) , Ralph Lee (Rythm) and  (although not too clear) is Dave Shirley (Lead Guitar). Health permitting there is hope of a reunion over the coming months

Samisen – Felix

Sarah Harvey…This Samisen song is called ‘Felix’. The recording is from 1976. It was first played at the Carlisle gig where we were supporting Felix and was written in tribute (a.k.a. mickey-take) of their complicated and off-the-wall music. We wrote this song all in good humour in our more mischievous days and when we played it at the gig the members of Felix told us they thought it was really good. Felix were, and still are a great bunch of guys and took it in all good humour.

Wendy Weaver… Nice presentation How you have all changed 😈😈😁x

Pete Fisher.. excellent drumming Bernard Jeffery!
