Radio Cracker – Sounds Like Hastings – cassette 1989?

supplied by Pete Prescott

Featuring Liane Carroll, Roger Carey, Mick Mepham, Buick 6, Jez Gillett Band, Ian Barnett, Splash.

Andrew Bantock… Ah, the memories. I was Station Manager of Radio Cracker that year. Memories of watching from backstage and Simon Halsey doing the radio mix. I don’t actually have a copy of that.

Mick Bean… When I did a Buddy Holly stint on Radio Cracker (who remembers that groundbreaking local radio station?) I left a photo of Buddy Holly on display in the studio, I’d got his wife María Elena Holly to sign it when I met her in London. I wonder where it is now… Thats rock ’n’ roll I guess.

Ian Barnett… I remember recording a track at Ian Harvey’s studio for this- wish I could remember what I actually played

Pete Prescott… I’ve got a copy !

Tich Turner… I’ve only just seen this poster. Pretty sure it wasn’t 1985. I was still in The Ya Yas then. I believe the MM Band started in 1989 and we played last night. Another year!

Alan Esdaile… Thanks for correction Tich. Have updated from 1985 as that was a Tuesday. 22nd Oct 1989 would have been a Sunday.

Ernest Ballard… Still good whatever year Tich ha ha. Perhapes getting confused in his later years ah ha ha ha

Liane Carroll… Yep. 1989 I think. Rog and I weren’t together till 1987. I will ask him asap. Happy new year!! Xxxx

Pete Prescott… I was in Switzerland in 84/85 and 86.this was 89 or 90.I’ll check it out when I get home. Can’t remember much about this gig. It would have been fun with that line up I imagine.

Michael Mepham….Wa-heyyyyyy, pix of me that I didn’t have before!!!! Top is Paul Tanner/guitar, Next are, from left, Liane Carroll – keys, Robin Heggie – bass and yours truly – guitar. Next l to r me, Garry Blakely and Steve Cooke – violins and Robin Heggie during the finale, Hands Across The Water. Next – me, Bottom, the late, lamented Michael Bettel – drums and percussion. Lovely chap and a great drummer. Died way too young.

Michael Mepham….Mullets a-gogo! Garry and Steve stepped in to play the string parts as cellist Ian couldn’t make it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t filmed or recorded, as far as I know, as the camera ran out of film before the track. The whole audience sang the chorus and we thought that maybe they’d be able to hear it in Africa. Great gig. Also, as I remember it, the event raised £3000 in the day. Fantastic for Hastings in 1986! Ian Dobson presented most of the bands and Joe Macilvenny not only sang with Better Days but also organized most or all of it. Marvellous memories of that gig.

Liane Carroll….awww….memories!!! x

Alan Esdaile….The photo at the top looks like the mike stand is going through Paul Tanner’s stomach.

Mick Mepham…..A bit like the church lightning rod that falls off the top of the church in the Omen and transfixes the priest ……
