SMART SOUNDS by Colin Bell reviewing Mud: The Singles 1973-80, 3CD Set
Terry Tollan… I did Les Grays 50th birthday party entertainment
Pert Fortsch… Still played by the Hairy Monster. “Lance Collins Retro Roadshow”
Lance Collins… And our clients love to hear it. Last week we kicked off with. You + Me =Love The Undisputed Truth. Followed by Nanu Nanu Daddy Dewdrop. After the gig had people asking where they could find them to download
Mick O’Dowd… As you so rightly say Colin, us DJ’s owed them a great deal in providing floorfillers. Along with the Mud Dance(fingers in your belt loops now!) they provided good clean pure pop! Remember working with them on The Pier and they were a nice bunch of guys as well. The memory button was well and truly pressed when reading this review.
Colin Bell… Mick, as i was writing it i thought i know 3 colleagues who will no doubt be nodding in agreement as the memories came back!
Judy Atkinson… That was a great trip down memory lane
Alan Esdaile… I always remember the gig posters they had, a warning sign with the words ‘Mud On The Road’!
Monsters of Glam Rock Sweet and Mud – tour programme – White Rock Theatre Hastings 1990’s
Supplied by Colin Bell
Anyone remember this, or the year? Colin thinks The Glitter Band were also on the bill.
Matt Thomas… 91 or 92 I was in the Yelton sitting next to Les Gray.
Ian Mantell… it was just Sweet and Mud, Brian Connolly was in a bad way but his voice was still strong. A clue to the date is the use of the expression “Brian Connolly’s Sweet” he and Andy Scott had been in dispute over the name and so agreed to identify which band was playing in the early 90’s
Karen Sweatman… I was there dancing like a prat! Think it was around 91. You might be interested to know around 1990 I saw a band at The Crypt called The Wandering Crutchless with two ex members of Sweet in. They were brilliant
Jan Warren… Sweet are playing at The dlwp, Bexhill on The 21st December!
Ralph Town… I think the story of Sweet Mk1 is one of the saddest in music.
Blog: Before glam: the debut 60s singles of Bowie, Bolan, Slade, Mud and Sweet by Darren Johnson
When glam rock burst into the UK pop charts in the early 1970s the genre may have appeared all shiny and new and suitably outrageous but many of its lead players had been trying to make their all-important breakthrough in the previous decade. Five of the acts we look at here all released their debut singles in the mid to late 60s.

Mick O’Dowd….I remember both of these well. Not very large attendences but Chicory Tip did hand out some cheap bubbly at midnight!
Titus Luxor… Just been listening to Chicory Tip. Some good stuff. Some songs sound really dated (of course) but a very interesting band especially with the Giorgio Moroder element.
Gill Harrod… Shirley, did we go to these? I know I did, I think it was with you and Eileen!
Jan Warren… ………. and, again, Rubber Band are supporting act!! – we got to know them really well as my hubby was resident DJ in the hotel before it became “Scalliwags”, and he was like a “roadie” to MUD when they played at “Dreamland” in Margate – I remember “Rubber Band” well, they released a single called “Moonwalker”, the singer (Dave?!) was very “Bowie-type” and I think they lived in Forest Row (near East Grinstead) in Kent, I remember us driving them home after a gig??!! – has anyone got any pics or news of Rubber Band?? – I’d love to know??!! 🙂 xx
Andre Martin… When we first signed the group they were known as Black Raven and from Forest Row – I will see what cuttings I have in the archive and forward to you.
John Coleman… I was there! That was a long time ago! Utterly brilliant bands on the Pier! Will never forget !
Tony Pettifer… We were from Forest Row we were Black Raven before Andre & Paul had us change names.
