Ritz with Hat Trick and Samisen – Ore Centre 8th July 1978

supplied by Roger Carey

Sarah Harvey… My artwork….. on my birthday. I organised all of the Ore Festivals in the 1970s and created the posters during my lunch-hours at work. I was a design draughtsperson in Battle. Also played in Samisen on the night.

Alan Wood… Wow !!

Mike Mitchell… I went to that one. I was obviously very keen. 75p entry and I was only earning 50p an hour at Dickies Discount at the time.

Barry French, Dennis Wootton & Roger Carey . (and David Cash not in photo)

Andy Qunta….Saw them several times! Great stuff!

Sarah Harvey…..There is one member missing from this picture…I think it was Dave Cash and this is probably a picture of their last gig with this line-up (See article dated Sept 9th, 1978 attached)…..they did continue however although I have no idea who joined them! 😉

David Cash…. Hello David Cash here, 1978 member of Hat Trick till I moved to London to go to College. I’m a keyboard player and Music teacher now at Northbrook College (Worthing) and ICMP (London). Still bump into Roger Carey from time to time at Liane Carroll gigs.

Barry French… Very fond memories of my time with Hat Trick.
Den & I are are currently playing with SLAM, & we bump into Roger from time to time & reminisce about the old days. So pleased to hear that Dave Cash has done so well for himself (Great musician but he’s the only guy I know could get drunk on half a shandy) Perhaps sometime we will all get together & play a few tunes (Stranger things have happened).

Sarah Harvey… How lovely to hear from Barry again……I was gutted when he left Hat Trick. A wonderful person and always remember him playing in a band with Den’s brother Del. Can’t remember for the life of me what they were called. Help me someone! Remember them playing at St.Helens Youth Club on the Ridge and at The Regent.

Barry French… Hi Sarah good to hear from you too. The band that Denis & I were in was 1st Emotion. Together with Den’s Brother Clifford, we had a resident spot at the Regent Hotel (About 1972 ) Later my Sister Jenny joined the band & we played the Caravan site & club circuit for about 2 years. Den & Cliff left to form a rock band called Butch (Which I believe played the Pier & The Aquarius) while Jenny & I formed Amethyst with Paul Hugget & Will Powell ,we played the club circuit until the break up of the band in 1977.

Lucy Pappas… Den and Del! I was in a band with them! Lived on Chown’s Hill? We rehearsed in their garage, I think!

Sarah Harvey… I remember all of those band names and I always remember you playing Yellow River….just can’t remember which band that was, but its funny the things that stick in your mind. I think I always came to see you with Roger Carey or Kevin Potter. I have to say that Roger is coming on really well as a bass player 🙂 and haven’t seen Kevin Potter in over a decade.

Lucy Pappas… Sarah, we used to sing ‘Yellow River’ at St Helens Youth Club. Some T Rex, too, not sure what else. I loved being part of the band but did we even have a name?

Redstar Richter… who scored the goals?

Barry French… Hi Lucy I also remember those day’s rehearsing at Chowns Hill. We originally were going to call the band Typhoid but good taste prevailed & the name was changed to “Iron -Stone”.The line up was your good self, Diana Smith, Den, Cliff & Me. I think we did a couple of gigs at St Helen’s Youth Club, & yes I too remember Yellow River. (Magical times!!!) Really amazing to hear from you.

Lucy Pappas… Aw, Barry, I wish I could recall those days more clearly! We were called ‘Iron Stone’? Who knew? Where is everyone these days? Maybe we need a reunion gig? xx. I don’t think I have any pics of the band. Roger Carey gave me some of us with Phil Gill a while ago but I don’t think I have any of youth club days 🙁

PUEBLO – Roger Carey, Pete Fisher,  Bernie on Drums.

Bernard Jeffery….Yes it is definitely Pete Fisher and I’d say it was about 1973

Pete Fisher….Pueblo: Roger Carey-bass, Bernie Jeffery-drums, Pete Fisher-guitar/vocals
I remember this photo session was at a Pueblo rehearsal, in Ore Centre, photos taken by schoolmate and fellow musician (string/electric bass) John (Dai)Davis, and developed in his dark room at home. I’m pretty sure this is 1974 – going by the hair length – Roger and me were at Hastings Grammar School – I’d left the previous year, and Roger must have been coming up to his A-levels….Bernie started with me in Black Ash in 1970….I think Roger came into the fold around 72, have to check the archive! Back then Bernie was still playing his dad’s old jazz kit, Rog had a little Burns bass through a Laney top and home-made cab, I was playing my second electric guitar, a strange no-name thing with piano key controls that didn’t do much. By then I had my first decent amp, a Vox AC15, which was just loud enough to compete with Bernie’s drums, but I used a Cry Baby wah to boost for solos.
Bernie and me both liked Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, and West Coast…..Roger used to play me Allman Brothers Live At The Fillmore in the music room at school, but he was also really into Free, ( as we all were – All Right Now was one of the first songs me and Bernie attempted around 1970/71) and his melodic inventive riffs with singing vibrato were reminiscent of Andy Fraser. Our rehearsals were in fact long jam sessions, with endless solos, on various favourite themes. We cobbled together a short set list for the few gigs we played…various covers, and a couple of my early attempts at songwriting….and singing. I have a press cutting from 17th January 1974 from the Hastings and St Leonard’s news, which says we got a standing ovation at our recent gig at Hastings College….possibly the gig where Tony Qunta, my guitar guru and friend, lent me his brand new Orange 100 watt stack, which was a bit like driving a Ferrari when you’ve only got a provisional licence – it practically blew me off the stage! The article goes on to say we’d been playing together since September the previous year, and had already also played on the Pier, where we were again to perform on Friday February 8th 1974, in a “local band bonanza”. I still have the ticket (60p!) which lists us, a band called Butch, and local heroes Stallion (with Steve Dimitri on drums and Phil Gill on guitar). I remember we were on first, and I for one was very nervous, especially with lots of friends in the audience. It was a pretty big deal back then, having seen so many great bands on that stage…..the band expanded to include a second drummer (!) for a couple of months, but then I left Hastings and moved to London in September 1974, so the band broke up. I still have some crumbly old recordings and a couple more photos….time to delve in the archive!

Pete Fisher…an early gig, possibly 1973, guitarist Kevin’s 18th birthday party, at the Langham pub, near Quarry Road.

Terry Pack….I think I saw this band in 1974, or earlier…. Roger was a great inspiration to me aged 15.

Tony Qunta….Great band!

Pete Fisher….Thank you Tony! You and Andy, and Factory were a great inspiration!

Phil Gill… bloody hippies.

Roger Carey (bass), Wesley Magoogan (Sax)

Wesley Magoogan… Blimey ! With a young Roger Carey !

Sarah Harvey… Great photo. I remember watching Felix rehearsing at St.Helens Church Hall and also remember organising the annual Ore Festivals….happy times. 🙂

Yvonne Cleland… Those were the days! Has Rog got any of the rest of the band?

Alan Esdaile… Sorry Yvonne , no other Felix ones at the moment but hopefully he will find some more. I do have some very good Pueblo ones to post soon.

Sarah Harvey… Samisen used to rehearse there as did a few other bands. Harry Williams was a big part of the Ore-Zodiac Community Association and I think the Town Council may have rehearsed at The Zodiac Centre (Formerly Round Table) in Priory Road.

Kev Towner… Reading all this stuff, I come away with the impression that everybody was in about five bands – at the same time!! LOL

Phil Gill… Still are Kev.

Conan Howard… found I have some photos of FELIX at the Carlisle when Samisen played at the same gig. will see if I can post them , if I cant do it I shall pass them over to SARAH to do it ….all the best CONAN

Dave Weeks… Bring back the Ore Centre rock festival.

Sarah Harvey… Funnily enough I thought of reviving it for old times sake but got enough to do right now with Hastings Rock

Yvonne Cleland… I was at that gig. I seem to remember that Will volunteered me to announce Felix!

Ernest Ballard… Great picture

Jo Turner… Me and Liz Turner. I remember this so well.

Tony Qunta… Great pic! Brings back wonderful memories

Colin Gibson… Is that a Burns bass Rog is playing? That was my first bass! It had a mini jack, so if your lead went, you were fucked!
