Kevin Burchett…..used to be my favourite haunt before scalliwags

Mick O’Dowd…..Took over as resident DJ after Colin Bell. Chicken & chips in a basket for 60p to get around licensing laws. Wonderful! I was there in 72

Andre Martin…..Here is something from the time – From Hastings Observer 1971

Jane Hartley……Did Colin come back again or did you stay until 74/75 Mick? You know that saying ‘if you remember the 60’s’, I seem to have that problem with the70′!!!!!

Mick O’Dowd…..I don’t think he did Jane . As you say age blurs!

Mark Edir…..25p including supper hahaha was that how much it cost , for me details like that are all lost in the mists of time 🙂

Jane Hartley…..How do you boys remember so much? I couldn’t remember who dj’d bonitas after colin bell and before mick jim tim and dave

Mick O’Dowd…..It was I who followed on from Colin”Ding Dong” Bell Jane

Jenny Tyler…  I  can’t believe the prices

Peter Millington… SPYKE – Worth every penny LOL

Jon McCallion… we played there after doing the record in London that same day

Mick Knights… Always wound up there after chucking out time on a Saturday night, I was most probably there for the Christmas eve, the lure of a chicken and chip supper would have been too great!!

Caz Simpson… I loved Bonita’s

Pete Millington… We (SPYKE) played there on 22nd December, 5 weeks after my lovely daughter (Becky) came into our world. What a Christmas present! Remember that night well – Chris Sayer, Ian Williams, Terry Chedzoy and Ginger Millington (me)

Mick O’Dowd… Aah! Chicken in a basket!

The Pied Piper – Manor Road Hastings – 1974

Who remembers The Pied Piper pub?

Jim Breeds… Nope! It must have been bad for the children of the area!

Richard Turner… My dads band playing Thursday

Pete Millington…  Yep! SPYKE played there regularly in the mid 1970s

Alan Esdaile… Did someone say Crispian St Peters played at this pub?

Pete Fairless… Don’t know, but they used to play out at the end of the night with Bob & Marcia version.

Virginia Davis… Yes. My grandparents lived a few doors away. Spent many times in there with family

Dawn Leaney… Oh yes.. had good times there , dancing to the disco.. l think it was on a Friday night!

Tony Davis… Yes. I ran into the guy who managed him and he played there opening night

Jacquie Hinves… Yes , I do!

Terry Hardwick… I used to do the disco with Tony Murray his Dad Ted and his Mum Carol ran it .

Samantha Blake… I remember the pub x

Jo Turner… Yes, Lizzy and I often went there

Roy Penfold… Became The Manor in later years I believe…

Sandy Max… I only knew it as the Manor

Pete Brazier… I know for certain that his Record was lol

Ralph Town… Regularly pissed in there from 1975 to around 1979.

Ken Copsey… My grandads local when we lived in St Mary’s Terrace.

Tony Court-holmes… yet another old pub there used to be so many up that way but not any more

Merv Kennard… yes remember it well. played there a few times. landlord always wanted to flip a coin for double or quits before paying.

Colin Jefferys… Loved this pub was a regular in 1979. Carol snd Ted super couple. Ted worked for the Daily Mirror by day as a printer Carol paid me 50.00 to whitewash the cellar one weekday. Had some good times with them and yes Tony was involved in the disco.   Great days

Pete Brazier… Our Band “IRON DUKE” used to practice there and did a couple of Gigs there too! (The first one was my first ever proper gig!) I was so nervous my leg started to shake so I put extra weight onto that leg which stoped the shake but yes you probably guessed it! The other leg started to shake! I was leaning from side to side trying to get my legs to stop shaking! And all I could think is “Is this how shaking stevens got his name?” Either people didn’t noticed or thought it was some sort of dance because I never got referd to as “Shaking Peter”

Dukes Bar London Road Bexhill – 1974

Pete Millington… Remember it well! Always packed out! SPYKE at the time was Ian Williams, Ginger Millington and Terry Chedzoy.

Dave Nattress… The York, London Road, Bexhill just round the corner from the now long gone Queens Head where local bands played. The York has been putting on bands on and off for a very long time. A band I saw once there was called “Esgaroth” – the name I’ve since learned s the name of a community referred to in The Hobbit – good on you Google for telling me this. Anyway, they were apparently from Tunbridge Wells and what little else I remember – easy to get wrecked in The York back then, was that the singer resembled Jim Morrison, and delivered a bit like him. They were quite heavy, sinister, dark sort of sound really, did their own stuff I recall tight and great overall. The singer really stood out – very different. Never heard of or saw them after that. Would have been about 1978/1979. Anyone else heard of them?

Robert Searle… Played there when it was The York with Haze,Easy Street, and Centre Page, really enjoyed playing there

Peter Millington, Chris Sayer & Paul Burton.

Yvonne Cleland…..Lovely one of Chris

Chris Baker….Excellent band! Remember them well.

Peter Shaw…..Looks like Val Doonican at the front helping out in the Blue Peter studio! Chris was a talented player and with musicians Ginger and Paul should’ve appeared on TV!!

Peter Millington….You are spot on Peter Shaw. Our gear was held together with “sticky back tape” when we first started as SPYKE, so I can relate to the Blue Peter link. I’d sold all my gear when The Confederates ended after Johnny Conroy emigrated to Canada. Within weeks of it all going out the door at a knock down price and me spending the proceeds on my first car, Paul and Chris asked me to start again – hence the DIY gear lol

Andre Martin…..Great looking stage set as usual thanks to the stage crew of the day, now I wonder who was working with them !!

Janine Anne Hemsley…..Omg. I was with Bob Miller but on the early 80s. Don Lang was also playing with Bob. Great times.

Kevin Burchett… SPYKE PLAYED AT SCALLYS THE FIRST WEDNESDAY AFTER OPENING SOON AFTER THEY REFORMED TO BECOME JINKS

John Storer… Aah! …. those halcyon days of crimpolene flares! 🙂

Peter Millington… We didn’t reform, we just added Rod Trowell to our line-up and changed our name from SPYKE to JINKS. That change happened after 28th May 1975 and before our return to Scalliwags on 11th July that same year. Thanks for posting Kevin – my “style cred” has just hit the buffers!

Peter Gladwish… Just noticed my band, ‘Vogue’ were on this advert. We were regulars at Scallywags for quite a while.

Pete Prescott… I still have the Jinks album on cassette (light blue cover )

SPYKE – 1968 L-R Paul Burton – Peter (Ginger) Millington, Chris Sayer – Playing in support of Bob Miller and the Millermen – ITT Annual Christmas Dance – White Rock Theatre.

John Storer… My Mum and Dad went to this

Robert Searle… Was Terry on drums Pete

Peter Millington… No, Robert .We were a trio for about a year then a duo after Paul left then I managed to convince Chris that a drummer would be a good idea. Spyke played without a drummer for about 2 years. I have to say, playing bass and holding a consistent beat in front of the ITT dancing crowd of 1000+ was testing. Good training though.

Yvonne Cleland… Lovely Chris x

John Kingdon… What a memory, dear old Chris, God Bless him and Henry both sorely missed.
