Sheila Goss… Climbing ropes in PE

Colin Bell… Brings back happy memories of doing this at The Grove in the 60’s!…what’s the betting health & (miserable bloody) safety wouldn’t let you do it now?!…

Stuart Moir… And why is that I wonder ?? perhaps the fact that if the highest one fell he’d probably break his leg .

Phil Foley… I hated doing this, never got more than about 6ft off the ground!

Mark Randall… Phil, but you’re 6’ tall?!

Kate Recknell-Page… Could never manage them ok on the rest !!

Dawn Mann… Yep remember these.

Tiny Brady… Dawn, that’s me at the top Dawny

Mike Waghorne… The gym sport I liked was Shipwreck, swinging on the ropes, onto the wall bars, from box to box etc it was only the fat boy that fell off & got hurt.

Colin Bell…  I remember doing that Mike, it was like a special treat at the end of term at my school

Fred Marsh… Could never do it, still envious

Dan Ranger… Leg burn was a right of passage. Always some t@“t at the bottom trying to swing you off

Mick O’Dowd… The P.E.Teacher at my school used to make us do that to check if we were wearing underpants which was not allowed in the gym! Mmmmm!

Will Cornell… Did ya’ll have a “Prime Ministers” or “Queens Physical Fitness Test”? We had to do a “President’s Test” every year (thanks JFK). Climb ropes, do 30 pushups, 100 sit ups, run, jump etc and be sore the next day. Then I saw my high school track and Cross Country coach climb the ropes with his hands only. He was 51 at the time (he also used to run with us). I guess JFK was right.

Sparrow Baker… That was my favourite.

Mark Randall… Oh Gawd yes! And the climbing frames that pivoted out from the wall

Jacquie Hinves… And no health and safety!!!

Colin Bell… Jacquie, and we all lived to look back on it!, fondly in my case

Judy Atkinson… We had girders across the ceiling so I would climb up the rope & get on the girder during games of “pirates”

Colin Bell… Judy, It was called ‘pirates’ at my school too, you could use all the equipment but you weren’t allowed to touch the gym floor during a game! ☺ happy days!

Paul Coleman… Loved “shipwreck”. I’d climb up the middle rope in about 10 secs. Swing from side to side & grab the next  2 ropes & pull them up. Untouchable! Like being in a nest. Great times.

Jacqueline Marsh… I could never do it lol

Baz Cooper… Jacqueline, I was hopeless at it too!!!

Darren Johnson… I hated PE. Would have loved miserable health and safety inspectors to come in and stop it.

Paul Knight… I was at the Grove early60 s mr Horn was our games teacher happy days

Colin Bell… I remember him Paul
